This is why I am not a fan of high speed police chases. A young man is dead, and the perp they were after was probably not worth it with our revolving door jail sentences. I hope they at least fire the dude.

Makes me wonder about how criminal defense lawyers (excuse the redundancy and spare us the jokes) should/could use this to challenge charging decisions.
If the SPLC was worth half a bag of poop they could do a real scientific analysis of treatment of LEOs vs gen pop in this regard.

OK, noted, you can run people down on the road in Florida while speeding 20 mph over the limit and not face criminal charges. Oh, what’s that you say, this only applies to cops?

The statistics are not publicized but officers coming to the aid of other officers drive like idiots and cause a lot of accidents. It’s part of the fraternity - and you’re not in it.
The deputy had a green light and the boys were not in a crosswalk.
This article does not contain all of the relevant specifics. I do know that the incident took place after dark. I nearly ran over some idiot kid the other night. He had a dark stocking cap on and was wearing all dark clothing while walking a third of the way in my lane with his back to me. I didn’t see him until I was way too close for comfort. Fortunately, I was only doing about 25mph. But it scared the bejeebies out of me.
The stupid kids we have around here are always walking the same direction as the traffic in the lane and up and down and across unlit curvy country roads with dark clothing. People are typically driving on these roads between 40 to 60 mph while they are drunk or smoking pot and texting on their cell phones. The kids just assume drivers will see them. Its a wonder we don’t have more road side crosses... and I can think of half a dozen within a 5 mile radius of our house.

It isn’t the first time the deputy has been reprimanded for speeding. It is also not his first pedestrian crash while on duty. FOX 13 has learned that in 2017, the deputy was involved in another incident where his patrol car clipped a pedestrian with his side mirror. Investigators said he was distracted by his laptop while driving 41 mph in a 25 mph zone.

I creamed a pedestrian back in 2006. Totally his fault. Fortunately for us drivers, if a pedestrian is in the road and not in a crosswalk, they are generally at fault unless you were breaking the law at the time. But in this case they quoted the law that applied. If the only thing he did wrong was go too fast, and the law says that is not enough to convict, then he can’t be convicted.
In my case the guy I hit tried to sue twice but my insurance company warned them that they WOULD fight it, and it went away. It put me out less than 15 minutes. I feel zero responsibility for this particular one and lost zero sleep over it. There was zero that I could have done to prevent it.
Whenever I am a pedestrian, I’m ALWAYS aware of the cars around me and their actions. They’re dangerous.
More and more I’m losing confidence in LEO’s.
Of course, the State Police ran the investigations, so...

Just goes to show, the more things change, the more cops drive like the shirk-laws that they are. Criminals in badges are the absolute worst.
