Man goes on racist rant after trying to order Mexican restaurant's taco special on wrong day

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Surveillance cameras captured a man’s rant at employees over a taco special at a Mexican restaurant.

KNSD reported that a customer thought a sign outside Palapas Tacos in Anaheim, California, said fish tacos were $1.99 daily. He missed the words at the top of the banner that read, “Especial de Viernes.” The words mean “Friday special” in English.

Multiple signs list daily specials, which are advertised with the day of the week in Spanish.

Palapas Tacos owner Juan Del Rio said the man was upset because he was charged full price for the fish tacos. He ordered them on Monday.

“He saw the receipt and he saw that it was full price,” Del Rio told KNSD. “That’s why he gets mad.”

KTLA reported that the unidentified customer berated the cashier and yelled at other waiting customers.

“That’s (expletive)! It says it in Mexican. We’re not in Mexico, we’re in America,” the man says, according to surveillance video. “This is America! Not Spanish!”

“OK, I’ve never had fish tacos.”

Me neither; I’ll pass on those.

OK, based on that sign - the customer is an idiot. He is wrong and should apologize.

Makes me wonder if he went in there itching to start a fight.

Not excusing the customer's behavior, but with this guy, there were never any misunderstandings.

The morons could have apologized, and given him a taco for free. They woulda had a customer for life.

This is an important issue for retail outlets.

My wife works for a national chain (that shall not be named). One day they got overwhelmed with truck deliveries and did not have time to take down the old "sale" stickers on some items in the store.

A customer bought one of the items that had "sale" on it but was rung up at a much higher price. The customer got belligerent, and the local manager refused to honor the sale ticket.

The company manual specifically says that in that circumstance the store should honor the sale ticket--so the local manager was wrong.

Sometimes the local managers forget why they are in business--and that is to please the customer as best they can--especially when the customer has a reasonable case to make.

It’s false advertising.

Or maybe he thought it mean “Vern’s Specialty” and Vern is the name of the cook.

Thanks. I didn’t care for tilapia the two times I tried it.

The fish that Peter and his fellow apostles of Jesus Christ caught in Lake Kinneret were probably tilapia. However, I usually avoid this species because they are usually raised on fish farms in Third World countries.

I would not patronize this restaurant if the owner did not post the information in English. This customer does not get my support.

“The cashier pointed out that the specials signs in the restaurant are in English and in Spanish.”

Customer was wrong. I speak Spanish though I am a gringo. If the sign were only in Spanish it would be wrong for his business and I would object for my gringo friends that do not speak Spanish. It was in both languages. That customer was wrong.

ps
Me = hard core libertarian conservative and as such if the owner wanted to display his specials only in Spanish I have no problem. It is his business. However as a businessman he wisely displayed it in both languages.

I'm no expert on "introduced" fish, and wouldn't recognize tilapia if I were served it.

Honest question: what do you dislike about tilapia?

I don’t care for the bland cardboard to muddy taste of the farm raised fish. Also, the farm raised variety have less healthy omega3 to omega6 ratios. It may be a tasty fish if caught in the wild but I’ve never had wild caught. I also don’t care much for carp, catfish, shad, nor other bottom feeders. Additionally, its becoming too ubiquitous and crowding out a lot of other good options. I remember when we used to celebrate greater fish diversity...

Supposedly the fish are all a single sex due to hormonal treatment - this keeps the fish all a single generation in a batch - I can’t find the info right now though.

Thank you!

Weird coincidence: Shortly after I posted my question, I looked up "Tilapia" online -- but my wife called me to diner before I read the results.

She served broiled fish fillets, and when I asked, "What kind of fish?", she answered, "Tilapia"!

So -- to emphasize the coincidence, I went back and brought my laptop to the table -- and we all had a good laugh... '-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have to agree with you: if it hadn't been for the lemon pepper she seasoned it with, it would have been virtually tasteless...
It wasn't cheap: four fillets for ten bucks.
But the worst news is that it typically has twice as much omaga 6 as omega 3 fatty acids...
Thanks again; I'm now much better informed on the subject...
~~~~~~~~~~~

It's time to go crappie fishing! '-)

It reminds me of movie Falling Down. That was a good indicator of where our country was headed and that was 1993.

I totally sympathized with Mike Douglas in that one. That, and the "Smiling Stonewall" as the fast food franchise. Ran into that many a time. Never shot up the place though. :-)

Crappie are tasty! I like bluegill (some folks call it ‘bream’) and perch and walleye as well. Bass is OK. I sometimes (maybe every 2 years when in proximity to your state’s southeastern coastline) catch ocean bluefish and cure it with a ‘gravlax blue’ recipe I’ve found online.

Wish I'd known about that "Gravlax Blue" curing technique when we used to catch bluefish in Cape Cod Bay! Frankly, (even after removing the dark red meat) I've never learned to tolerate bluefish.

But, I would have liked to try smoking it, and I definitely would have tried (and experimented with variations on) the "Gravlax" curing technique, had I known about it then.

Thankfully, 1/4 mile through the woods from our house in Norfolk, MA, was a good-sized pond/lake that was overpopulated with crappie, and boasted schools of bluegill that ran up to 10 inches long! Great fun on ultralight tackle -- and good eatin'! (My two favorite food fishes...)

In the summers, between work and sundown, I usually could catch more than a meal for our family of five...

My daughter and I caught these in a little over an hour one evening...

Curiously, the locals called both species, "Kivvers" -- and claimed they were too bony to eat.

I never argued with them... '-)

Awesome catch!

I had never heard the term ‘kivvers’ but then I never heard the term ‘buhdayahs’ for potatoes until I moved to MA.

Several places in MA sell bluefish pate’ which is quite tasty.
