Northern and Southern California seafood fans say they’re buying giant lobster claws sold at Costco stores, and photos on Instagram and Reddit suggest each claw is much larger than a human hand. Screenshot from Instagram

=================================================================

Seafood lovers on Instagram and Reddit are freaking out over photos showing gigantic lobster claws, and those posting the pictures say they bought them at Costco stores.

“This thing is unreal!” one Instagram user wrote this week, sharing a couple of photos of a massive claw in Southern California’s Newport Beach. “I mean, come on. I’ve seen a few big claws at Costco before, but this one’s crazy! We just had to get it.”

Another Instagram user, sharing more pictures, said the gargantuan claw size “makes me wonder how big the tail is.” Photos of those Kirkland-branded claws show them selling for around $45 each at a Costco in mid-February.

The claws come in a range of weights but generally are between 2 and 7 pounds, INSIDER reports. Most of the lobster claw sightings at Costco stores have been in California, according to the publication.

A few years back, son-in-law’s dad caught a California spiny lobster that was about 15 to 18 pounds. Simply massive. They don’t have the big claws, so a lot of that weight was the tail. I’m guessing you’d have loved it.

In colonial Boston, domestics' contracts had a claws, er, clause, limiting the number of times per week lobster could be served to the household staff.

Two, iirc.

If seafood is tasteless then it was frozen and became freezer burned or at least dehydrated causing the flavor to disappear.

Sam’s has a cool trick for dealing with that problem. They dip their lobster tails in some kind of viscous saline solution before they freeze them. The frozen saline coats the tails and prevents both freezer burn and drying. It’s a little like what happens with a whole tenderloin that’s coated in its own natural ooze and vacuum packed in air tight plastic where the ooze freezes, protecting the meat and is, in turn, protected by the plastic wrap. A tenderloin that’s protected and frozen that way will last a few years if kept frozen at subzero temperatures. I know, I’ve done it.

I think the Asian philosophy is if it ever moved or wiggled on its own then it’s edible.

long ago I read a passage that described lobsters so large that early settlers could walk across the water on their backs. Now I believe it.

That’s exactly what we’re eating tonight. California spiny lobster. They are sooo good. That’s the only kind of lobster we get. Hubby used to be a diver and would dive for lobster. Now my neighbors at the marina all take advantage of lobster season. This year was a good one.

We flew into the Abacos one time on our way to Green Turtle Cay. You can only get there by ferry. Our plane was late so we missed the last ferry. They sent it back for us. When we finally got to the hotel the manager came out and apologized to us that all they had left for dinner was lobster. Lol. Small hotel with one seating for dinner and you had to make a choice from 2 items by noon everyday.

I can’t be the only one, but I find lobster absolutely tasteless. As in, water has more flavor & taste.

Lobster is very similar to chicken - almost all of the flavor comes from what you put on it. The big difference is chicken is cheap and meaty, while lobster is way overpriced and mostly shell.
