NASA weighs shelving Boeing rocket, using other option for flight to moon

The Space Launch System (SLS) “is struggling to meet its schedule,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said at a Senate hearing Wednesday. The rocket won’t be ready for a launch in June 2020, when NASA had planned the Exploration Mission-1 flight of its Orion spacecraft around the moon.

The agency is now exploring options for meeting that deadline using “commercial capabilities,” Bridenstine said. He stressed that the agency remains committed to Boeing’s SLS, the largest rocket in U.S. history and a “critical capability” for future deep-space missions.

An October 2018 audit by NASA’s Inspector General found multiple management flaws in the SLS program, and said that Boeing was likely to spend at least $8.9 billion for the rocket, double the original budget for the contract. A test flight of the Orion capsule was launched in early 2015 aboard a Delta IV rocket built by United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Without the SLS, NASA would be forced to purchase two heavy-lift vehicle launches and then integrate the Orion with an upper stage in orbit, adding to the cost. Bridenstine told the Senate panel that NASA may need further financial assistance from Congress.

NASA said we were Killing the Planet and on the verge of turning into a raging inferno in just a few short years, can’
t they use Rockets that use non Carbon Emitting Green Energy?

They are using rockets that burn hydrogen and oxygen, which produces water. They also use solid fuels that emit terrible toxins; and, those aren't carbon based.

NASA management has become "me too" liberals who just make up politically correct problems.

Boeing - the company that gave us the 737 Max and the failed KC-46 tanker program. Their social media team is going to need to get busy on FR.

“Boeing - the company that gave us the 737 Max and the failed KC-46 tanker program.”

Before beating up too badly, keep in mind that government agencies usually come back with huge numbers of changes that affect design and schedule of major programs. In other words, it may Boeing’s fault, or it may be the government’s fault...or it is likely some of each.

Don’t you mean the molecule Dihydrogen Monoxide? Or perhaps the ionic Hydrogen Hydroxide?

The SLS was out dated the first time SpaceX landed a rocket vertically. We need to scrap it. It is time all the other launch system companies got on board with 21st century technology. The SLS was always life support for the remnant industry that had supported the space shuttle. But it has had the effect of institutionalizing the past. The more the old guard digs in, or gets supported by big contracts, the farther ahead companies that are actually innovating will get.

I think manned space flight is a waste. The one thing the ISS is teaching us is that the human body is not suitable for space travel. They have to exercise for >2hrs/day and they are still invalids when they get back. Food, water, oxygen, temperature, radiation, psychological problems, these are all issues that are not going to go away. We have by far gained more knowledge at lower cost from unmanned probes. All we get from manned space travel that could not be done by machine is cool pictures of people floating around.

If I were king, I would take the money spent on manned space travel and divide it between unmanned probes and basic research into physics. Manned space travel, the way we really want it, isn't going to happen until we solve some fundamental problems, like the speed of light and artificial gravity. In the mean time, we could be exploring and learning about our solar system, and maybe even sending probes to our nearest stellar neighbor.

OK, flame away :-)

“SpaceX landed a rocket vertically”

All that money AND blood spent on the reusable Space Shuttle, and then SpaceX does that. I am not involved at all with the space program, and I still felt a little embarrassed by our folly.
