llustrations by Heinrich Strub for Das Feuerzeug (The Tinderbox / Fyrtøiet) by H. C. Andersen (Switzerland, 1956)
Michael at Stopping Off Place kindly donated these scans, and then the actual (eye-popping) book. If you are wondering what it could possibly be about, read the plot on wikipedia.
Illustrator bio by Atlantis-Verlag ["Heinrich" is a pseudonym]:
Heiri Strub was born in 1916 and trained as a typesetter, then becoming a graphic designer and a painter. From 1945, he was working as a freelance artist. He illustrated books for young adults, and modern fiction. His colourful picture books, allowing a fresh view of classic texts, are still impressive. Just as impressive as Strubs political biography: After Hitlers assumption of power, seventeen-year-old Strub joined the Youth Committee Against War and Fascism, and he still is an active trade unionist. Because he was impeded in his work by the authorities, he moved to the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) with his family in 1957. In 1971, he returned to Switzerland.
Also see this long bio in German.
I plan to feature another book by Strub tomorrow.

Somebody in Germany had some good dope back in the day.
I enjoyed "Alita Battle Angel" which opened last month. But some people really couldn't get over the eyes of the lead character. Japanese manga can be like that. But your German author really goes over the top!
Disney Princesses have had alien eyes forever.
Most cartoon eyes are big. If real people had eyes like cartoons, it would be creepy. But, you would be offput by their four fingered hands first. Ha ha.
I recall reading that story as a child, but for the life of me can’t remember where. (I think it was “Richards Topical Encyclopedia.”) There were three dogs, one with eyes as big as teacups, one with eyes as big as saucers and one with eyes as big as mill wheels. But that’s all I can recall.
Needs proper PPE.
To each his own.
Enormous eyes. Not crazy eyes.
Due to being oppressed in post war West Germany he just up and moved to East Germany in 57 then just packed up an moved to Switzerland in 71. Hmmm...just like that.
I never could stand that story. The soldier starts off by deal-breaking, killing and robbing the old witch who let him have pockets full of gold for bringing her the tinderbox. Well, she was a witch, so that’s okay. But now we have a liar, murderer and thief for our hero.
And then he gets wealth, power, princess, after a brush with death.
Thanks. I bookmarked their Facebook page. Lots of interesting art.
