Jussie Smollett has been hit with an additional 15 counts of filing a false police report by a grand jury and is now facing up to 48 years behind bars.
The Empire actor was initially charged with one Class 4 Felony charge of disorderly conduct last month but a grand jury has applied that charge 15 times over in an 36-page indictment that was returned on Thursday.
Now, he is facing a maximum sentence of 48 years behind bars and fines of up to $400,000.
He is expected to cut a plea deal with authorities, according to experts cited by ABC.
Counts one to seven apply to the comments he made to police officer Muhammed Baig, who first responded to his apartment when his friend called 911 on January 29.
The second set applies to Detective Kim Murray who interviewed him later that day.
She is who Smollett told, according to the indictment, that one of his attackers was a 'white male'.(snip)
The actor's lawyers say he has been the victim of police and prosecutorial misconduct.
They say his presumption of innocence was 'trampled' and that the entire investigation into the attack has been flawed.

A similar case in Illinois recently in a sentence of 3 years in prison, the maximum for a false police report.
Mitchell Dutz reported in Dec that a black guy stole his car with his baby in it. The report was fraudulent, he was charged with reckless conduct just like Jussie was. Mitchell pled guilty and was sentenced in Feb to 3 years. Lets hope the Illinois judges stay consistent.
anyone who files a false police report or fakes a crime should do the time someone else would do if they were convicted of the crime, up to and including the death penalty.
I despise the lying communist prick. But 48 years is utterly ridiculous. People routinely get less for murder, rape, and armed robbery.
In the old west 3 or 4 years in state prison was considered a very tough sentence.
In the USSR the longest possible sentence was the dreaded 10 years, the “tenner”. More than that and it was death.

They said very likely the sentences would run at the same time, all 16. So the max he would do is 3 years.
With little to no criminal past, probation is likely.
If his “drug addiction” defense works, he gets probation which can be REMOVED from his record not too far down the line.
So for possibly getting MANY people injured in a tit for tat war, this POS will likely see no prison time and not even have a record in a few years.
That’s why he said he had drug issues right after it happened.
He’s still saying he’s innocent.
Why not? It leaves doubt in idiots’ minds and by the time the trial comes, in a year, no one will care anymore anyway.

Actually, 4 years sound about right to me. I don’t like prosecutors piling charges on to force a ‘deal’ and see no reason to change my principles just because it’s a hypocritical liberal in the cross hairs.
Just to be clear, though, my concern is with the process, not Jussie, who I am not concerned about.
Yes, absolutely, he should face the charge; but 16 charges with a possible 48 yrs in prison is governmental/prosecutorial tyranny.

I won’t attempt to predict it how this will play out in the end in terms of detail, but I am pretty certain that Justice will not be done. Anyone who hopes for or expects Justice is going to be disappointed
