Roy Moore 'seriously considering' another Senate bid after 2017 failure

Roy Moore said he is "seriously considering" a 2020 rematch against the current incumbent Alabama senator. The fiery and controversial candidate, who became the first Republican to lose a U.S. Senate race in Alabama in 21 years for his defeat by now-Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat, says that he is open to the idea of running for the GOP's nomination again. “I’m seriously considering it. I think that was stolen,” Moore said of the race during a Friday interview.

The problem that people should always remember. There are 40%-45% left votes, 40%-45% right votes, 10%-20% “independent” (or votes for the last shiny object that caught their attention before election day!). If you bring in somebody who divides our conservative share & alienates the “independent” we lose! Moore seemed to have accomplished much of that in Alabama before he even ran for the Senate. Listen to the people here from Alabama, Moore is just a poor candidate and stone deaf to the local political environment.

Don’t bite folks.

No Moore shakedowns, he and Jeyaff should start that bait shop and leave politics to the whippersnappers.

I think many here underestimate how disliked that clown is by rank and file conservatives in Alabama.

Very true. Moore was also an inept politician and awkward public speaker. During that election I heard no one say anything good about Moore or defend him. Silence. That's when I knew he was in big trouble.

I supported Mo Brooks in the primary but he was completely overshadowed by the Luther and Roy circus act.

I’m not suggesting he was a good candidate or that he should run again... or that we would not have been better off with Mo Brooks, far from it. I am suggesting that once he did secure the nomination, the GOP should’ve realized this tanking his candidacy was just the trial-run for the next candidate or judicial nominee. It just served to demonstrate that all one needs to do to eliminate a Republican is to make an accusation. When one of their own is attacked, the dems circle their wagons, the republicans form a circular firing squad... combine that with the fact that the typical GOP representative or senator spends 3/4 of their time in office stabbing their constituents in the back and the rest of the time campaigning, it becomes clear that the GOP deserves to go the way of the dinosaur. The only reason they’re still here is that nobody except the GOP establishment deserves Democrats in power and we haven’t yet found a way to make the GOP dispensible.

Anyone who displays such common sense as, say, TAKING THE WEEKEND OFF BEFORE THE ELECTION TO GO SEE A FOOTBALL GAME IN NEW JERSEY, is exactly who we need in the Senate!

I've never been affiliated with the Republican Party, so I don't approach any of these discussions from a purely partisan standpoint.

Having said that, I'll point out that a candidate who runs on a political party line should not be surprised when he spends years pissing off the party leadership and they don't support him.

Let's face it ... Moore was an absolutely awful candidate. That guy has "LOSER" written all over him, and his career in elections reinforces that perfectly.

Moore may not have been well liked, but I don’t see him cozying up to Schumer and the Left.

I would have been shocked if he even showed up in Washington for more than two weeks out of any calendar year.

Moore has no business running for a legislative position. He has no charisma, no appeal outside his narrow base, and has not demonstrated to me that he even understands how a legislative process is supposed to work.

Maybe this time Republicans who still control the party won’t purposely throw the election. I submit they’ll use his loss as a reason to reject nominating a true, conservative Deplorable. I despise them more than I despise dems who don’t pretend they agree with our values.

The RNC will have to pay some more women to accuse him of writing in their yearbooks. The ignorant suburban women of Alabama must get turned on by reading the inscriptions in their yearbooks.

I think your analysis is spot on but you understate the problem. I think your percentages are correct on a national level but from my perspective from afar, I don't think they represent Alabama. I would suggest that 25%-35% left, 55%-65% right, and 10%-20% independent is probably more accurate. All a decent conservative candidate has to do is not mess up. Judge Roy Moore couldn't even do that. The GOPe might have helped to undermine him but Moore is a flawed candidate. Surely, Alabama must have a solid young conservative who doesn't bring baggage like Judge Moore. Let that person run.

He's been burning bridges with the GOP for years ...

FRiend, everybody on this board has been burning GOP bridges for years. We call it the GOPe. They don't represent us. They are democrats in disguise. I can't condemn Moore for doing the same thing we've been doing. I can support him, however, and would if I voted in his state.

I don't disagree with you.

But then you have no business complaining when the GOP leadership doesn't support the candidates you vote for, either.

One thing I've noticed here is that Roy Moore seems to have much stronger support here on FR from people who don't live in Alabama ... and the people who do live in Alabama seem to have a sobering, realistic view of just how awful he is as a political candidate. I'd say that's a very telling sign right there.

man... The GOP establishment freepers were organized to respond to this thread right away.

Look - Moore is political toast. REALLY BURNED political toast.

At this point, if he's trying to get ANOTHER Democrat elected to an Alabama US Senate seat, which are Republican by nature, then I'd have to call him a Democrat.

Becuase he's playing for the other team now.

It's kind of like my rule-of-thumb about phony Republicans who are "OK" with Democrats being appointed to the Federal judiciary.

If you're OK with that after watching 2-3 years of Democrat judges running the country from their own personal fiefdoms, then you're a Democrat. Bill Kristol and Jonah Goldbrick come to mind, along with dooshes like David French and Bret Stephens.

The one shining star of the Moore debacle was that it ended the political career of Al Franken who, believing Moore would win, took one for the team so as not to be a distraction. It also severely damaged the political ambitions of Kirsten Gillibrand for forcing Franken to fall on his sword.

Refreshing to see someone(s) who understands politics posting on this issue.

Moore was the trial run for Kavanaugh.

Exactly true. And, because the test run was so successful, the democrats are *still* in shock from failing to bork Kavanaugh.

Alabamians should and will vote for the candidate they desire. If that is not Moore, so be it. Primary him out. What destroys those of us who live outside Alabama is that Moore won the primary, but then was successfully Kavanaughed to the point of losing what should have been a straightforward seat. We non-Alabamians are frustrated with the liberal communist machine in our midst succeeded with character assassination. And we are frustrated by the good conservatives of Alabama being fooled by it. Alabamians will have the candidate they support; and I'm fine with it. But with my posts I do hope to encourage FRiends from Alabama not to have the wool pulled over their eyes a second time.
