He contracted measles at 30 - he blames anti-vaxxers for 'spreading fear' and 'ignoring the facts'

Joshua Nerius became privy to his parents’ anti-vaxxer convictions only after he contracted measles himself at 30 years old. Now he’s speaking out against parents who hold similar beliefs, calling them “people who want to spread fear.”

What began as a rash and high fever in the spring of 2016 was later discovered to be none other than measles— a highly contagious, and often life-threatening disease that’s become increasingly rare since the introduction of a vaccine in 1963.

It was only after an emergency room doctor told Nerius his condition strongly resembled measles that Nerius asked his mother if he’d been vaccinated. She responded with a thumbs-down emoji.

Anti-vaxxers, or, those against vaccinations, are often considered to share more of a fringe mindset, often holding steadfast to the belief that vaccinating children can lead to afflictions such as autism. While this claim has been disproved by many reputable sources, fervent anti-vaxxers argue the denial is a conspiracy orchestrated by Big Pharma.

Dr. Paul Offit, who is both a professor of pediatrics at University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine and director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, spoke to CNN about the children he treated during 1991’s measles outbreak in the City of Brotherly Love. “They were absolutely miserable. And occasionally, they were dead,” he said, referencing the nine children who died as a result of the outbreak.

He wasn’t vaccinated but that’s not the point. People/families were against vaccinations LONG BEFORE the word autism was ever thought of or uttered so to say that is the reason is just garbage. The writers/researchers are ignorant and write anything that will grab attention and sound scientific.

My siblings and I were all born in the late 1920’s, early 1930’s and our parents raised us all WITHOUT vaccinations as we all raised our children and as our children raised our grandchildren. Autism had nothing to do with it. I guess we all figured at one time “it was our right.”

How many FReepers had the measles, mumps, chicken pox, scarlet fever, whooping cough all without side effects and have always been able to lead a normal life? Check out the schedule and the number of vaccines in ONE APPOINTMENT going into a tiny, newborn baby today and tell me that’s fine!

I expect before too long we’re going to have to answer to some power at what age our children were when we potty trained them or how often we made them brush their teeth or took them to a dentist. It’s definitely going to be against what “someone” believes.

Your faith in vaccinations is admirable! Almost 6000 years of your ancestors survived without Vaccinations, and yet everyone today who forgoes them is stupid...even though may folks getting sick have gotten vaccinations.

“”Most anti-vaxxers are liberal.””

Where on earth did you come up with that? MOST? Sure surprises me and would surprise my siblings and our offspring. That’s why I’m on FR - LOL!

A friend of mine lost his ten year old sister to measles. I can’t believe she wasn’t vaccinated against them.

BRAVO! Doesn’t make sense to the lay person but for some screwy reason, the AMA thinks it does and all pediatricians follow the Bible of the AMA! Add the CDC to that..

The CDC suggests 12 vaccinations for infants up to 4 months old, or 3 per month for the first 4 months of life.

“...And Hepatitis B, at five hours old, is freakin’ insane.”

I met (with hub) with my pediatrician a couple of weeks out. I told him no hep B at five hours old because that would be unnecessary

I said no OHIO unit (the warmer they keep the kids in for four hours wondering where the heck mom is, while they needle jam caustic fluids into their little muscles under FBI interrogation-like lights). The baby stays with me

He would budge. Said many babies die because they freeze to death at the hands of their mothers

I had to give in. That argument was so groundless so insane I figured he’s got some motive like having to justify expensive equipment no way am I going to win that fight.

There was more.

I did my research.

Hub and he, both mil officers chatted

After, hub said, “I’m impressed at how caring he is”

I said “yeah, don’t get me started. We’re going to be here in case of an emergency. The rest he can stay out of our business”

After the birth I sent hub with the baby “don’t let that kid out of your sight.

In the nursery He had to fight to prevent a couple of things including the hep b which hurts like a B.

It was administered months later

Let’s give credit where credit is due and I know that will be hard for FReepers to do for a Kennedy. Robert Kennedy, Jr. has spoken out quite forcefully about the schedule and amount of vaccines given starting at birth. When he talks about it, he mentions the number he had as a child and compares that to today and it’s staggering.. President Trump in the beginning of his time in office mentioned appointing him to some commission on the subject but I haven’t heard anything about it in a long time.

Thanks for this post - it may open a few eyes!! Whatever you do, don’t mention Dr. Mercola’s name or there are some here whose heads will explode just seeing his name.

You can run around and trust that big brother knows best.

Or you can do your own research.

No, they are NOT liberal. It crosses the political spectrum, and here in TX, virtually every elected D is pro-forced vax, while 75-80% of our R’s in the State House are pro- parental consent.

So, stop pulling “facts” out of your rear end

Thanks and you’re right about DJT and the vaccine commission. I think it’s probably a causality of the Mueller witch hunt. About the CDC schedule; I question the sanity of any parent who would vaccinate their infant app. once a week x the first 4 months of their life, but to each their own.

Not only are they not 100% effective, but whatever they are is temporary

Oh for Pete’s Sake. it is JUST the measles.

Every kid in my generation had them.

It is uncomfortable, but no big deal.

Hep is a herd vaccine, it was started as a preventative being given to ghetto kids who might not see health care in their entire lives.

of course it has morphed into a got to have for all kids, for one cannot be biased.

Same for Chickenpox. Originally given for daycare kids, now considered a got to.

If vaccination works,
then why do you ever need a second shot?

Just CLOSE DOWN THE BORDER.
Give America a Wall Vax shot.

You’re so right. I was shocked to see a nurse come in and give my newborn nephew a Hep B shot. I was more shocked to see that his parents didn’t let out a peep. Poor baby!

I don’t know why people don’t protest this. I feel exactly the way you do about the vaccine schedule.

I was vaccinated against measles, but at age 10, I had German measles. I don’t know how.

1 in 10k

If any disease death rate is 1 in 10,000,
your child died of different factors,
not the disease,
like malnutrition, poor diet, lousy immune system, no exercise, drug addiction, pharma side effects etc.

Do not blame vax free people if you cannot properly care for your child.

Dr. Paul Offit . . . spoke to CNN about the children he treated during 1991’s measles outbreak in the City of Brotherly Love. “They were absolutely miserable. And occasionally, they were dead,” he said, referencing the nine children who died as a result of the outbreak.

I know this will be hard to believe (/sarcasm), but this article is spinning that story a bit.

Of the nine children who died, most were part of a church community that didn't believe in medical care at all. When their children caught the measles (or anything else), they prayed over their children but refused any medical treatment for them.
