Lawsuit: Aldi turkey burger ‘exploded,’ burned Wilkinsburg woman

A Wilkinsburg woman is suing Aldi over a turkey burger she said exploded as she cooked it, burning her hands and forearms.

Gloria Besley filed the personal injury lawsuit in Allegheny County, alleging that Aldi was negligent in allowing the Kirkwood turkey burgers to be sold without warnings about burn risks.

“(Aldi) placed into the stream of commerce a defective product,” the lawsuit said.

Besley bought the frozen burgers at a Pittsburgh Aldi store in July and decided to cook one Aug. 19, the lawsuit said. She followed the “to fry” instructions, placing one frozen patty in a small amount of vegetable oil in a pre-heated skillet.

The burger “exploded,” causing second-degree burns and scarring to both hands and forearms, the lawsuit said.

Besley, who is asking for damages in excess of $35,000, will have to continue to seek medical care for the injuries and may suffer “permanent loss of use of a bodily function” and “loss of the enjoyment of her usual duties,” the lawsuit said.

Besley, a self-employed real estate broker and board member of the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation, referred questions to her attorney.

Attorney Anthony Giannetti said he does not comment on pending litigation and that the “defective warning” complaint speaks for itself.

I have spent many hours in Wilkinsburg, years ago. It was a dump then (1990s) it is worse now. FWIW.

“She followed the “to fry” instructions, placing one frozen patty in a small amount of vegetable oil in a pre-heated skillet.”

Putting a frozen burger of any kind into hot oil will do that I would think.

I think the “small amount of vegetable oil” was more than they are letting on, because fragments of frozen burger didn’t burn her arms and scar her hands.

If the money amount wasn’t so small, I would think the person is gold-digging.

Or maybe she is aiming small.

Reminds me of the Pittsburgh woman who sued Giant Eagle a decade or so ago because they left a chicken head in the package of chicken she bought. She was so startled at seeing the chicken head, she hit her head against a kitchen cabinet and (allegedly) was knocked out.

I had a chunk of potato explode once in a microwave, with considerable force.

It was actually inside the microwave, in a plastic container. It blew the top off the container and made a mess. The power was on when it happened. It sounded like a real explosion, a loud bang.

I don’t see how this could happen once the food item was removed from the microwave, but I suppose anything’s possible.

It’s also possible this is a hoax to get a settlement. Those have happened many times.

So, now they will have to put warnings on all frozen turkey patties:

Do not fry while frozen...................

Anyone with half a brain could understand the instructions of “pre-heat”.

Next lawsuit...suing because they choked since the instructions didn’t say “take small bites and chew 20 times before swallowing”. Wait until the SHTF. They won’t last long.

No doubt, seeing as it has lost almost half of its population since 1940, according to census figures:

Wilkinsburg is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States adjacent to the city of Pittsburgh. The population was 15,930 at the 2010 census, having lost more than 13,000 in the 70 years since 1940, when 29,853 people were enumerated.

That is wise.

Funny, I tried making blackened chicken last week...I had made some blackened halibut a few weeks ago and my vent didn’t have any problem...but making the chicken filled my house with smoke! Shoving the lid on made no difference and the smoke boiled out...:(
