Streaming and on-demand is the future.

Why would we want to watch the crap being produced by Hollywood? You don’t need a 4K player to watch the older movies. 8>)

This is Bad news. The only way to see what real 4K looks like is with a HD-DVD player. Streamed 4K is very compressed and the sound is not even close to a physical disk. Sony could have saved the day but they did not put a HD-DVD player in the PS4 Pro. When Sony put a Blu Ray in the PS 3 it established the tech. Sony pretty much killed HD-DVD in the crib. Many will never know just how good 4K movies can look and sound. This sucks. Again quality is scarified over convenience and distribution costs.

I don’t really know what 4K is except it is supposed to be better quality than 1080dpi and that is all it takes for many who are buying a new device.

I have noticed some real bargains on regular TVs lately. Three days ago I noticed a 43 inch 1080 TV at Walmart for $95.

I recently purchased a movie which included 3 different disks. One in Blu Ray, one in DVD and another for computer which I haven’t figured out yet.

At most distances on a 1080dpi TV, I can’t tell the DVD from the Bluray. If the screen is close I barely can tell. I imagine the same will be true of 4K.

I had heard about Samsung stopping production of 4K models, but this is the first I have heard about them quitting Blu-ray. I usually stay up to date with technology, but I have not made the jump to 4K. My 1080P television still looks great (and it does 3D), and I am not ready to start upgrading to yet another format. In spite of what some say on this thread, Blu-ray is miles ahead of DVD in terms of quality (both sound and picture). A lot of FReepers are content to watch a postage stamp sized picture on YouTube and claim it to be "good enough". Just as a lot of people think a compressed MP3 sounds as good as a CD or SACD. They don't.

I will likely upgrade to a 4K TV when my current 1080P TV bites the dust, but not before. However, based on this news, I may buy another Blu-ray player as a backup. None of my home theater products are Samsung anyway. I sometimes buy digital copies for cheap (from resellers) of movies or TV shows that I don't care about enough to buy on Blu-ray. But the worry there is that the digital copy can be pulled out of circulation if the studios decide the content is objectionable somewhere down the road. Already, streaming services pull content all the time just to make room for other programs.

They forgot about the half of the population on metered internet connections and connections to slow to stream.

There’s a massive difference between high def and standard def on a calibrated display. Depth, contrast, detail, it’s all there.

Sadly most people have no idea that high definition displays need to be calibrated. Most people leave their sets on the torch mode they used to select the set in the first place. The best displays are NEVER shown in toirch mode.

Torch mode is the most “vivid” setting with contrast set to maximum.
“brightness” is a black level setting, “contrast” is a white level setting.

The general public couldn’t learn it and that’s the death of high definition.

For what it's worth, I have a 32" Vizio in my den and a 32" Samsung in my kitchen. Both are HD but the Samsung is far superior in picture quality than the Vizio.......

Don't know about their DVD players but as long as they focus on their TV's, they should stay at the top of the market......

I have a Sony UBP x800. It plays everything from4k, blue ray to regular DVDs. I love it and no problems.

I have Sony 4K TV too. No problems with that too.

Finally, we have an Apple 4K TV and Roku Ultra. There are all great.

There is no need to go to the movie theater anymore.

I have a blu-ray cd of John Wayne’s “The Searchers”.
The detail is so good you can view the stitching in the shirts. I do not like the streaming or broadcast quality.

I watch a lot of the old shows being broadcast on say ch 2.2 and 4.2 and 5.2 etc. They do not even broadcast at 480 let alone 1080. More like cell phone camera quality. The stations that say own ch 2 have the best quality then sub divide the ch 2 or 12 or 46 so many times that the quality is lousy. METV on ch 56.3 is so bad many times that you cannot clearly make out any details of faces.

I will buy blu-ray and then strip the copy protection then copy onto my pc as a blu-ray or a high quality mp4.
I use the PLEX app on the pc and ROKU to view on the tv set.

Movavi Video Suite 18 - TIP install trial then as you uninstall it will offer a 40% discount!!

The scary thing is going to be when the home internet prices go way up. Because it’s definitely coming, with everyone cutting cable with those same companies and Trump’s FCC guy changing net neutrality

I guess it’s justifiable because the intrnet is being used more for streaming, but I could see a situation where people have to cut the cord on home internet also

It’s with a 4K video like this that I appreciate fully a 4K TV...
