Crap. Anyone know of a good alternative?

Blu Ray is certainly not going away immediately. Sony, LG & other manufacturers are still making the players, and the movie studios will keep churning out the discs as long as people buy 'em. As Obama might say, if you like your Blu Ray, you can keep your Blu Ray.
There is definitely a trend toward streaming, though. I was never much of a buyer of DVDs or Blu Rays, so I don't personally care. On the other hand, I do understand why some would prefer a physical disc to a download. For one thing, discs typically have bonus content, featurettes, deleted scenes, commentary, etc., that you almost never get with a download. Also, at this point, audio video/quality may still be better with a physical disc compared to some streaming material.

Oppo, LG, Sony and Microsoft X-Box One S.
I use LG on my computer. I have an old Oppo Blu-Ray on the TV, but I usually rip the discs to my home server and watch them from there.
Oppo hardware is VERY expensive, but really strong and reliable.

Panasonic, and SONY to name a few. You can also buy new and used OPPO 203 and 205 4K players on the secondary market.
But the new Panasonic players that have just been released are better than the OPPO's in that they can read the meta data on the disk and correct the HDR (High Dynamic Range) output being sent to your 4K TV or projector.
