Not long ago, I wrote about the most overrated hits songs of all time. I love compiling lists like those because they allow me to get in touch with my snarky side as well as rant a little. In that post four months ago, I mused about doing a list of overrated artists. Well, the time has come.
Here are the ten most overrated musical artists of all time. Don’t get me wrong: I like some of the music by some of these artists, and though there are only a few bands and solo performers I completely despise, you’ll find that I don’t hold back on how little I care for many of the folks on this list.
Believe me, I’m aware that I’m going to ruffle some feathers with this list. I’m fine with that, because taste in music is always subjective. But as you read the list, keep an open mind and see if you agree with me. And even if you don’t, just have fun reading it

Practically everything they did from “Green” through “Up” was outstanding. Their really early stuff with IRS Records could be hit-or-miss as is their 21st century work (”Reveal” through to today).
Michael Stipe/REM and The Edge/U2 both should’ve been in the top 5 overrated...
I don’t think that Nirvana was the best of the era or Elvis either for that matter but without either of them, the floodgates for something other than the same old corporate crap would’ve gotten on tv, radio, movies, tours, store shelves, etc.
Elvis was on a small label (Sun) as were Nirvana (SubPop). For that reason they couldn’t be called “overrated” unless you buy into Camelot post-mortem “poet of a generation” marketing hype.
Influences an covers notwithstanding they were originals. And it is not hyperbole to say they changed the culture.
Maybe for the worse, though, huh?
Relative to album sales and impact, Nirvana is #1 and nobody else ever has been or will be close. They were the hammer that destroyed music in the US and reduced the industry to commercial recycling.
If there’s one band that’s gotten popular with genuinely original, quality music since, I have not heard of it. And I’ve been looking for all this time.
“Stand” was a terrible song, and unfortunately, one of their most popular from “Green.”
And since he linked his other list, I say that the most overrated song no doubt about it is Gangman Style, 3 BILLION streams? Bullsh!t.

I gave it a hopeful and honest listen.
Sorry, but JCM mailed it on that one, it couldn’t be more generic. If there’s anything original in it, my well-trained ear has completely missed it.
As usual a very subjective list, there are at least 5 on there I agree with.
Springsteen should be number one for sure.
There were certainly a lot of overrated groups to mnay to know where to start.

That's because of the pianist, David Sancious. I saw him perform that live in a tiny club in Brigantine NJ -- I was standing a few feet away -- and almost fainted. Sancious actually strummed the grand piano wires with his hand on those first bars. Springsteen was never the same after Sancious left, although Clarence Clemons did his best to hold him together.
Springsteen was an artist until Born to Run, at which point he sold out completely and just went for loud, repetitive crap, with amps the sized of sports cars stacked on top of one another so high you went deaf during live performances. That's when I gave up on him. When he was playing in little bars at the shore, he was wonderful. I went backstage and talked to him. He was humble and pleasant to the fans at first. By the time Patti joined the band, pffft.
ALL Rap artists, Prince, Queen, Mariah Carey, Lynrd Skynrd, Springsteen

They weren’t at the time they hit the scene. They were to music what black and white was to technicolor in the Wizard of Oz. They shall reign forever!

Lee: Polarizing voice, but easily ignored when you watch him sing, play the bass and Taurus pedals all at the same time.
Sancious’ greatest contribution to Springsteen’s career was the garage at his mother’s house. Sancious lived on E Street in Belmar and the band used to jam in his garage. That’s where the E Street Band got its name!
Lol, I’m what they call a completist (nut.) All the variants, takes, boots and studio chatter, I’ve got ‘em.
Definitely Dylan, instead of CCR. The author of the article rails against John Fogarty’s “screechy” voice, but I’d take Fogarty’s screech to Dylan’s “whiny” voice any time!
Although CCR did a few anti-war songs (”Fortunate Son” among them), they also did a lot of lighter music. Heck, they even performed at Woodstock!
You are both wrong on that. I think you had to be of the immediate postwar generation to appreciate how greatly he changed ballad and pop music. He had exquisite phrasing and tone when he was young and disciplined. He influenced literally hundreds of other performers, if not thousands. But by the time he was in the Rat Pack in the 70s he had become decadent and overripe, like rotten fruit with flies milling around. Too much booze, too many cigarettes, too many women, too much money to burn.
