Amazon is reportedly reconsidering its plan to open a second headquarters in NYC

Amazon may not be coming to Long Island City after all.

The e-commerce giant is reconsidering its plans to open a new 25,000-employee office in the Queens, New York neighborhood, the Washington Post reported on Friday. Two people “familiar with the company’s thinking” told the Post that Amazon was turned off by growing local opposition to the deal, which has been building up since Amazon announced it would be building part of its so-called second headquarters in the Queens neighborhood last November.

“The question is whether it’s worth it if the politicians in New York don’t want the project, especially with how people in Virginia have been so welcoming,” a source familiar with the matter told the Post.

Well I don’t see property values going up as as an issue. Sell take the windfall and move.

Is it Amazons fault that new york cant maintain and update their water systems? All of a sudden in 2019 amazon becomes the Goldstein scapegoat politicians target to blame for all their waste and kickback and mob/union sh1t that stops things getting done, or getting done right?

These liberal hellholes are falling apart because they are run by libtard socialists who transfer wealth to their favored groups, from evil rich people and businesses who want to just take money away from you, why they want to make you pay for that sandwich youre eating instead of giving it to you for free.

Even when they make a big deal passing laws making separate taxes for specific projects they still go and raid that money to pay for social programs, so they fuch all the taxpayers over again. They do it where I live when democrats are in power. They do it even when the laws say they cannot.

Tax incentives or no jobs?

That’s extortion.

All tax cuts are good. Repeat often. So you want companies to pay taxes? How AOC of you.

Where?

Every place in the NYC metro area is more expensive than that place....OR....they could move to Central VA, with all their friends, and change that place “for the worse” in no time.

That's better than if Amazon doesn't move to Queens, and NYC receives nothing in taxes from Amazon.

Over time, yes, they will pay taxes. And all the amazon folks will be paying sales taxes on all the goods that will be purchased. I get it. I understand that. And new stores, bars, restaurants, etc will open and neighborhoods will thrive and be reborn. I get it.

Yup.

But, the money has to be made up by someone.

That's where we disagree...

Amazon isn't getting money from the city. Amazon is getting a break, a reduction on the amount of money (taxes) it will pay the city. Amazon would build very large buildings that over time, and even from day one, would still pay more tax than the empty properties that occupy that location now.

There’s not a lot of empty properties in LI City. Redevelopment in that neighborhood has been going on for years b/c the Manhattan and Brooklyn are obscene. And all you have to do is cross the 59th St Bridge and your in Manhattan. It was the next logical place for the developers.

But, nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree....

So let them move to Virginia where the Democrat political leaders are all in blackface, support infanticide, or are sexual abusers. Not much difference from NY City, that’s for sure.

No one is against negotiating the best possible deal. People are against not having any input on a deal that will cost them millions, when they had no say in it,

Are you suggesting that the city government should hold a "vote" every time a business wants to get a tax credit as a condition for moving in and hiring local?

Not at all. But, how do you know that they’re going to hire local?

Take a look at all the big companies that have moved South..Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Chattanooga, etc....they got the same types of deals and promised that they’d be hiring like mad dogs. Instead they brought their liberal, Dem workers with them and are changing the voting demographics in all of those places. What were once solid ‘Red’ places are getting more and more purple by the day. If not straight, Blue.

Will that matter in LI City? Nope, as that place is where it is and no one is changing that.

At the end of the day, after going back and forth(politely) with folks on FR, it comes down to....I don’t think anyone should get anything like this. It shouldn’t be a game to see who can pony up the best ‘goody basket’, to entice me and my company. If Bezos wanted LI City/NYC from the get go, then let him dig into his pockets and pay. If moving half of his second headquarters to NYC was so important, pay up.

Who’s to say that when his subsidies and whatever else they gave him, end, he won’t pack his crap and leave for the next city that is willing to give it to him. At the end of the day, he’s the richest man in the world for a reason and obviously a shrewd businessman. So, then he tells NYC that if they don’t extend his deal, he’s out and taking all his people with him.

He’ll be just like all the other wealthy NYers that are/were able to leave and just left the state with over $2billion in less tax revenue.

I wonder what tax breaks Andy Cuomo offered Bezos to put his headquarters in NY City? It’s all about the money.

It’s still a tax revenue net positive to have Amazon and the 25K jobs.

I get it. I agree. Those hipsters will be buying a lot of craft beer after they pay their $3-4000 a month rent.

At the end of the day, I just don’t think that the government and the taxpayer should be giving up ‘goody bags’ like this. That’s all.

If Bezos and Amazon need/want to be in LI City, write the check.

Yup. And they pay city income tax, too.

I wouldn't call it a goody bag. But close to your point, I believe that government should be lowering taxes across the board not and targeting cronies.

Open a facility in some other state.

Any state but Texas. We're already full up on our quota of liberals, thank you.
