Are you suggesting that the city government should hold a "vote" every time a business wants to get a tax credit as a condition for moving in and hiring local?
Not at all. But, how do you know that they’re going to hire local?
Take a look at all the big companies that have moved South..Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Chattanooga, etc....they got the same types of deals and promised that they’d be hiring like mad dogs. Instead they brought their liberal, Dem workers with them and are changing the voting demographics in all of those places. What were once solid ‘Red’ places are getting more and more purple by the day. If not straight, Blue.
Will that matter in LI City? Nope, as that place is where it is and no one is changing that.
At the end of the day, after going back and forth(politely) with folks on FR, it comes down to....I don’t think anyone should get anything like this. It shouldn’t be a game to see who can pony up the best ‘goody basket’, to entice me and my company. If Bezos wanted LI City/NYC from the get go, then let him dig into his pockets and pay. If moving half of his second headquarters to NYC was so important, pay up.
Who’s to say that when his subsidies and whatever else they gave him, end, he won’t pack his crap and leave for the next city that is willing to give it to him. At the end of the day, he’s the richest man in the world for a reason and obviously a shrewd businessman. So, then he tells NYC that if they don’t extend his deal, he’s out and taking all his people with him.
He’ll be just like all the other wealthy NYers that are/were able to leave and just left the state with over $2billion in less tax revenue.
