the plan calls for something the world has never seen before: a submerged floating tunnel.
"Wind, waves and currents have hardly any influence there," Arianna Minoretti, a chief engineer at Norway's Public Roads Administration,
She said 50 international experts "are doing detailed simulations and detailed measurements of wind speed, current, undersea landslides, bedrock geology, etc." to make sure the plans, as well as the tunnel, is rooted in "the real-world environment."

And the tide only flows one direction? What a nice catenary curve you used to have, sad.
Will this solve the needs of folks “pining” to get to the other side?
I can't believe you beat me to it!
“submerged floating”
Oxymoron..................
Have you driven a Fjord lately?.......................
At Fjord, "Quality is Job 1!".......................
The ocean will snap the tunnel like a twig.
How can something be submerged and float at the same time?
That’s alright. They can afjord it.

And the hungry crocs are chewing on the support cables!!!
Could happen?
Some fish might simply do it just for the halibut!
Does Nessie swim that far?
Post of the day! :-)
.
Next theyll invent floating anchors.
Ahh, Norway, where all the little parrots are “pining for the fjords!”
“submerged floating”, how did this ever get past an editor?
Honestly, I do not think journalists were this dumb 10 years ago. The AOC’s of our modern education system are what Rush calls stupid and proud of it.
The ocean will snap the tunnel like a twig.
My guess?
It would need massive support and anchors combined with the elasticity of a wet noodle.
Possible, not probable; still I hope they go for it!
If you want some fruit, you need to climb out on the limb.
Tis a far,far better thing than HS rail.
Just think of the new improved Lake Shore Drive (Chiraq) and the tolls it would bring in! Endless kickbacks!!!
The 0bama mistake on the lake could expand to the water’s edge!

I know nothing about engineering but saw a show about the building of an island to accommodate an airport in Osaka,Japan and IIRC it had some of the things that you mentioned.

suspended in liquid?
“How can something be submerged and float at the same time?”
This could be taken as in neutral buoyancy, such as a submarine that can “float” just below the surface. This is easy for a sub to do since it’s gross weight changes very little and can readily adjusted when needed.
But with automobile traffic erratically fluctuating by huge amounts would make the tunnel want to sink during heavy flow and come to the surface when near empty.
I have a feeling surplus climate change and evolutionary scientists are doing the design work.
Floating does NOT require an object be on the surface.
A vessel can float at varying depths. Think submarines: Their buoyancy is reduced to a point where they still float, but are below the surface of the water.
That’s all this tunnel is: a submarine with its ends on shore, tethered in place.
I hope this works, because that would be a great example in how to connect Vancouver Island to the mainland. A “tunnel” from say downtown Victoria to Port Angeles. It’s only 20-ish miles.
