This is no ordinary blizzard thats blasting Buffalo and the Southtowns.
Not only is the lake-effect fueled storm dropping snow at a rate of 1 or 2 inches per hour, powerful winds are creating whiteout conditions.
Then theres the deep, bone-chilling, even life-threatening cold.

Gezz, more global warming..
Just when you think it can’t get any worse........it does......................
Gezz, more global warming..
*************
Lots of global warming to shovel.
The link to the pictures brings back a lot of memories.
I was there for ‘77.
My sister said that yesterday she couldn’t see ten feet in front of her to get home and half the time didn’t know if she was on the road.
The entire city is shut down and everyone is staying home.
At least for ‘77 it wasn’t so dangerously cold.
Yeah, when I was in college that’s what we’d call a *widespread death and destruction* weather event.
And this one is worth the dire warnings.
The winds and temps will kill quickly.
I grew up there — left in ‘66. We hardly ever had a school closing. Blizzards were part of life.
Unusual??!?!?!?!?!?
It’s Frickin’ Winter!!!!
Amazing photos. Thanks for posting.
I remember the Great Blizzard of 1978 in Indiana.
This is unusual. South of Cleveland, it’s been a real long interval of heavy snow and extreme cold. Add to that, a few times it warmed up just long enough for melting then freezing. Friday is supposed to be better.
Did you look at the pictures?
Especially the ones from ‘77?
It took a WEEK to dig out of that one.
Yup. blizzards are not common as they have to meet specific criteria to be classified as such, and the kind of arctic air combined with that event is unusual.
It’s not *just winter*.
The Buffalo area hasn’t had a storm like that, a blizzard, in about 40 years.
Every decade there’s always been one or two extremes either winter cold or summer heat; the lame stream media likes to hype the current conditions. I posted the picture for some humor.
My first interview for my first real job was in January 1982 in Buffalo.
I flew out from Boston on a beautiful, sunny day. The Finger Lakes were glorious from 33 000 feet. Rochester off to the right looked like a postcard.
Then - a dark speck on the horizon grew rapidly.
We landed in near-zero visibility. Last flight in or out for 36 hours. I was picked up the next day in a tracked vehicle, but the offices I was going to were closed so I interviewed in a bar.
And this was said to be normal.
I do too. Got all bundled up and went out for a walk around the neighborhood late at night. Thigh high (at least) snow. Quiet. A glow in the night sky. I thought it was cool. Course I was 18 at the time. Such adventures didnt seem that big a deal.
Now days its a bowl of chili and a few beers in the comfort of the family room is more my speed. No snow out but nice and chilly. Been a while since weve had negative double digits.
I dont envy the folks in Buffalo. They always get that nasty globull warming this time of year.
Did you take the job?
Remember a few years ago, Buffalo had such a blizzard, that they moved a Bills game to Detroit? I don’t recall how many inches or the duration, but, just recall we saw the rare event of an NFL game not being played where scheduled due to weather.
