Best Buy Security Guard Fired after Tackling Suspect Who Fled from Deputies in Roseville

ROSEVILLE – A security guard was fired from a Roseville Best Buy after he tackled a suspect fleeing from deputies last week.

Surveillance footage, taken by the family of Tyler, the former Best Buy security guard, shows Placer County deputies chasing a suspect through a Roseville shopping plaza.

“There was a guy who walked by and when he got by his car, a bunch of undercover sheriffs came over to arrest him,” said Tyler.

Tyler, an Army veteran, who only wanted to be referred to by his first name, was working at the Roseville Best Buy when he noticed a man, identified as 35-year-old Timothy Trujillo, knocking down a deputy.

“When they confronted him, the man punched one of the detectives and tried to run off, that’s when the security guard tackled the man, preventing him from escaping,” said Lt. Andrew Scott, spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

“He started running past me and I thought I was doing the right thing by stopping him,” Tyler added.

Eventually, deputies were able to arrest Trujillo.

But Tyler says his good deed was quickly overshadowed when he went back inside his job.

“I understood that when I went back in there I was going to get into some type of trouble because Best Buy policy says we aren’t supposed to touch anybody,” he stated.

One week later, Tyler says he was given the pink slip.

“My manager called me in and said corporate decided to let me go because I used excessive force and it was against Best Buy’s policy to intervene,” Tyler said.

A Best Buy representative issued a statement in response saying, “Our policy is clear, employees are not to chase potential criminals outside of the store. Chasing an individual in the parking lot creates a safety risk that isn’t worth taking, regardless of how noble an employee’s intention is.”

Tyler says he has no hard feelings toward his former employer. He’s just happy knowing he helped put a criminal behind bars.

“Seemed like it was the right thing, like I said it was someone running from the cops, seemed like the logical thing to do,” Tyler said.

Trujillo is facing several charges including assault, drug possession, and burglary.

Tyler says he’s looking forward to starting college in April.

A buddy of mine manages a TJ Maxx. Not only are they told to not pursue or stop shoplifters, they have a company policy of not allowing employees to exit the store within 5 minutes of the shoplifters exiting the store.

My friend almost got fired for going out to get something out of his car 3 minutes after the perps left.

I was teaching in a Woodside Queens JHS.I was heading out for lunch when a fellow teacher, a woman, came in hysterical. A man was cutting up a woman with a kitchen knife across the street. Our two safety officers without hesitation ran to the scene. I followed. A local realtor with a CCP cornered the perp and one of our safety officers disarmed him and hancuffed him while the other with me and another teacher kept the crowd back. Another teacher and an asst prin , both EMTs, tried to treat the woman to no avail. The cops from the 108 arrived, took the perp in custody, and dispersed the crowd and called for the coroner. Both our safety officers were reprimanded by the bosses and each sat down w/o pay each for a week for leaving their post

It's a wonder that
Best Buy isn't cleaned out of everything small and portable each week. Have a flash mob with a dozen ferals running out in a dozen directions with no one to stop them.

Paul Blart sums up the amount of authority a security guard has nicely

A guy in uniform makes the sheeple feel good. Little to the customers understand these guys aren’t allowed to protect them.

It’s a great tackle worth seeing that looks like it did damage to the perp. Also noted is that the humble guard looks like he just goes back to his job almost immediately after the incident. Well done, young man!

well, now everyone knows that Best Buy is a great easy safe place to rob, knock over....’

its ‘security guards’ are intentionally useless...there just for looks... sort of like a low-grade male fashion show

what a farce!

“Then what is the purpose of having a security guard?”

To prevent you from leaving without buying an extended warrantee.

LOL!

Maybe the Placer County Sheriffs Department might like to consider Tyler as a deputy.

what a stupid management!

if the idiot management doesn’t want the security guards to touch anyone, then issue them firearms for goodness’ sakes!

Then what is the purpose of having a security guard?

It serves the same purpose that a 'wall' does when there is no willingness to prosecute and deport.

He would be fired according to Best Buy stupid rigid policies. I’m amazed some innocent people hasn’t gotten killed with a criminal running them over or knocking them into hard fixtures and employees just stand there doing nothing

When I was 21 I worked at a discount store as the auto parts dept.
...security asked some of us to watch some guy who they knew was stealing stuff...when he was out of the store he was confronted...he ran...3 or 4 of us tackled him and held him till police came...his wife and child were there also. They were crying....he had stashed the goods in his pants. Very sad...but do not steal other peoples things ya’ dummy.

SHOULD he have been fired at all? Not in my view. But I'm also not going to tell a private company how to run their business.

In your "what if" scenario, the suspect kills a cop which means he would have no problem killing some random security guard. A citizen has no obligation to intervene in a major felony involving a weapon.

ATTENTION: ALL THIEVES & SHOPLIFTERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO SCORE SHOULD DO THEIR STEALING at "BEST BUY" BECAUSE SECURITY IS A NON-ISSUE.

Best Buy doesn't even have computer people to work on their computers.

They hire know-nothing video children, instead.

I applied there on a whim one time, between jobs. CS degree & 15 years in the field.

The manager chick who phone-interviewed me felt "threatened" by ny knowledge. ;-)
