The German government tasked a commission known as the National Platform on the Future of Mobility with finding ways to lower the countrys carbon emissions in order to meet EU targets.
Although a final report is not due to be published until late March, draft proposals seen by news agencies on Friday are likely to face fierce resistance from citizens, industry and politicians fearful of angering either. Among the proposals featured in the paper were a fuel tax hike from 2023 onward, an end to tax breaks for diesel cars, electric and hybrid vehicle quotas, and a 130 kmh (80 mph) speed limit on freeways which is the norm in other EU countries.
Speaking of the concept of limiting how fast Germans can drive on their famously speedy autobahns would seem a non-starter, and that point was made by Ulrich Lange, deputy chairman of Chancellor Merkels CDU/CSU parliamentary group: I dont think the suggestion of a speed limit is expedient. [ ]
Germany could face hefty EU fines if it fails to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, and observers see the transport sector, alongside energy and housing, as a key to meeting emissions reduction targets. [ ]
Beyond its suggestions for cutting automobile emissions the commissions paper underscores the necessity of strengthening public transport, as well as facilitating bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

NEIN!!!!
Stupid Germans, chasing a boogie bear hoax. Silly silly fools....
Bike lanes on the autobahahahan...
I don’t see Kraftwerk dubbing over their old albums to include that.
I thought most of the autobahns had kpm speed limits anyway...
They are already limiting the sections of Autobahn that have unlimited speeds. A lot of areas that were unlimited 10 years ago are down to 130 kph.
And in areas that are still unlimited, it is difficult to wind it up. East Germans in old Trabants and SEATs wont get out of your way anymore.
But you still have to look in your rearview mirror. You never know when a big Mercedes or Porsche will sneak up on you at 300 kph.
Carbon emissions what complete nonsense.
“Wir radeln radeln radeln auf der Autobahn” just doesn’t sound quite the same.
The country is being overran by immigrants and the people don’t rebel but will rebel over speed limits?
Boy, sure is a good thing Merkel shut down all their nuclear power plants......since they’re so concerned about carbon emissions and all.....
“National Platform On the Future Of Mobility”
No, that totally doesn’t sound fascist and orwellian at all, no really.
Loved driving our Mercedes diesel station wagon there while living in Switzerland. Wife didnt appreciate when I took it up to 150 mph, but mileage was still great.
Driving faster spreads out the emissions, making them thinner.
I had to remind my ex speed limits in Canada are posted in kph not mph.
You can easily exceed the 100 kph limit on freeways if youre not careful.
Set the speed limit to 55 mph. and let’s see what real Germans think about global warming.
A 90 km/h limit is certainly possible... but not politically feasible.
Maybe make use of 99 luftballons to float the populace around from point A to B
Make everyplace the same (McDonalds, corporate chain strip mall, Amazon, etc) and you don’t ever need to leave your planned community trap.
