Millions of Americans Are Wrong About Having a Food Allergy, Study Suggests

19 percent of the nationally representative group reported having a food allergy. But only 10.8 percent said they had symptoms consistent with an allergic reaction to food, such as hives, swelling of the lips or throat, and chest pain. The main culprits behind these allergies were shellfish, milk, and tree nuts. Those who didn’t have a convincing food allergy instead reported symptoms like stomach cramps, a stuffy nose, or nausea.

The findings, published Friday in JAMA Network Open, roughly match up to estimates from other studies, including those that confirmed a person’s food allergy with testing or medical records. In terms of the U.S. population, the study estimates, there are about 26 million adult Americans with a food allergy—and there are likely nearly as many Americans who wrongly say they have one. But that doesn’t mean huge swaths of people are pretending to have food allergies; it’s just that we could be a little confused about the terminology.

It’s likely then, the researchers say, that people might be mixing up a food intolerance or sensitivity with a food allergy.

Only half of the group said they had an official diagnosis from a physician. And while many of us develop food allergies early on in childhood, just about half reported finding out about their allergy as adults.

This lack of diagnosis is concerning, because food allergies aren’t something you want to be in the dark about. ...In the study sample, 38 percent of people with food allergies said they had to visit the emergency room at least once in their lives as a result, while around a quarter had a current prescription of epinephrine, which can prevent anaphylaxis.

Maybe the difference is in the peanuts themselves. Wheat, for example, now yields ten times the amount per acre from years ago ;however, it is far less nutritious.

Or, the researchers in question are buffoons.

Thank God for a small dog that loved the stuff I sneaked off the plate and under the table to her.

I didn't like peas and my dog didn't either. I did enjoy when my mom made baked potatoes when she also served peas cuz it was the perfect place to hide them nasty suckers.

Maybe “mostly” but I do have a grandson that had to go to the ER from hugging another kid in his preschool who had eaten a peanut sandwich and still had some on his cheek that my grandson touched with that simple hug.

I’m not hysterical but had to rush him to the ER after picking him up!

Not true, in 1960 I visited Pueblo Gardens grade school for 1st grade orientation and a boy died that day from eating peanut butter.

What’s the difference?

I had a scary reaction to penicillin once, though only after being on it for days...

Biggest one is “gluten”...you’d think that over half the country had celiac disease or something!

I feel left out of all the fun...

My husband stepped on a banana peel one day at school when he was a kid but didn’t think much of it but when he took his shoes off that night he went into anaphylactic shock.

Mysteriously, he has gone into anaphylactic shock twice in the last year and we can’t figure out what caused it.

I know a bunch of people who claim that they are allergic to various foods, wheat being the most common. I would guess that most of them are victims of their own imaginations. But, my wife actually is deathly allergic to fish and seafood. Her throat swells up and she stops breathing and she just about died. That is a true allergic reaction.

I ran into somebody like this who had a bad reaction at work from eating at a potluck party. Really dumb - you don’t know what has touched what on somebody’s kitchen counter, etc.

I think it’s GMO. Makes sense to me. Why else?

Might just be one of those things you don’t believe until it happens to YOU! :)

I don’t like peanut butter, anyways.

Nonetheless, I seem to have developed an allergy to tiny tomatoes, and Budweiser for some reason in the past few years. Go figure.

Probably a GMO issue. My best guess.
