There’s a sign outside the General Motors assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, that reads: “GM, We Invested in You. Now It’s Your Turn to Invest in US.”
Ever since the US’s largest car company’s immense assembly plant opened here 52 years ago, it has dominated this blue-collar town. Now GM workers here are furious that the automaker plans to idle – and perhaps permanently close – the plant.
GM stunned its workforce on 26 November, the Monday after Thanksgiving, by announcing it would cut roughly 14,000 jobs and idle five factories in North America, including the Lordstown plant, which employs 1,600 workers. One factor stoking the workers’ ire is that GM’s move came after American taxpayers rescued it from bankruptcy with a $49.5bn federal bailout in 2009.
While some have blamed Trump policies for the closure, or at least for his inability to stop them, it’s the company that workers hold most responsible.

There are far too many that get paid to do nothing at all, while the rest work their ass off.
IIRC, Obozo turned GM over to the UAW, and their pension trusts.
None of us bond holders were asked for our opinion, either.
Those “green” vehicles ran into a problem when the exterior too closely resembled a regular car; many people didn’t want to drive them unless it was very clear they were driving a “green” vehicle...

And the bondholders, who really got bent over. O'Bastard just decided to ignore laws and contracts, not to mention destroying an enormous amount of confidence and good faith that had been built into the bond market.

Frigidaire

While the company was owned by General Motors, its logo featured the phrase “Product of General Motors”, and later renamed to “Home Environment Division of General Motors”.

General Motors is a company that has been victimized by $hitty management for decades, plus a $hit union. Both are in the process of picking the bones of a once great company. And they’ve had a lot of “government help” from the Obola Administration.

That’s a worn out excuse and one that never had any merit, other than repeating a talking point. The foreign cars made in U.S. provides very good wages and benefits to the employees. Which is one reason that the unions have largely failed to penetrate into them.
GM also had a large opportunity during the Toyota JV time with the NUMMI plant, and they still didn’t get it. When Volkswagen came back into the U.S., Pennsylvania tried to woo them and Volkswagen basically said they learned their lesson the first time doing business in PA, and with the unions; so they went South.
FWIW, My son just got rid of his Nissan Leaf and replaced it with a Chevrolet Bolt. I’ve driven both cars and the Bolt is clearly superior. Plus it will go 300 miles on a single charge, whereas the Leaf was lucky to go half that far. With a solar system on his home, he pays NOTHING to get to and from his job. I’m not a big fan of electric cars, but they do have their place in our transportation mix.

No. The federal payola rescued the UAW from the consequences of bankruptcy. Union pensions were made whole. The union health plan was made whole. GM, however, was not "rescued from bankruptcy;" it went bankrupt. The shareholders lost everything. The suppliers and dealers were whacked. Management was purged. Everyone involved with GM took severe losses -- except the UAW. The parasite killed the host, and the government saved the parasite.
The screw up was in the TAX law. The Corporation’s Tax S/B (ON REPATRIATED $ ONLY) ZERO, if invested into Physical Plants and Factories with a maximum amount of say 85% automation; or pay the tax. End of offshoring, Trillions spent in US and JOBS would continue!

But I'll be the first to admit non-ICE cars have come a long way. But a 2011 Leaf? No way.
