Cath Smith, 47, was told that she had HIV eight months after sleeping with a stranger she met online.
"My first thought was, 'I'm going to die', she told the Mail.
"Then I thought I was going to look like an AIDS victim and then I realised 'oh no, I haven't even had the chance to have children yet'."
She's now been living with the virus for a decade and she's busy raising awareness so that other women don't end up in a similar situation.
Cath met a man online when she was in her 30s and her latex allergy meant that the pair didn't use condoms.
"After I contracted it, I had to realise that there was a potential risk - and ultimately I decided to take it anyway," she said.
It's only retrospectively that Cath believes that she saw signs that the guy had HIV at the time but didn't recognise that fact when they were together.
Cath said: "When I look back (on the relationship) I think he was quite unwell (with HIV) the whole time we were together."
(snip)
Cath, from Victoria, Australia, takes just one small pill a day to ensure that she has "zero chance" of passing HIV on.
However, it's still unknown what long-term effects the medication can have on people.

Funny how more traditional and Conservative women don’t have this problem.
Play stupid games win stupid prizes
There is such a thing as non latex condoms.
There are condoms not made with latex
I thought HIV could pass through latex anyway.
Fornication is a sin.
There are consequences for sinning.
There is only one type of sex HIV is transmitted which is why it is primarily a male homosexual disease.
You are VERY mistaken. HIV is a blood and mucosal fluid transmitted virus. It is very easily transmitted from any male having it to any partner of either sex. It is less likely but still possible for it to be transmitted from female to male.
There are reasons for the blood protocols in hospitals, too.
Sex does NOT have to be involved, though bodily fluids are the main known transmission vector.
Wrong, look up the facts about male female transmission. It does not occur and has not happened. The only occasions were most likely lied about.
Funny how more traditional and Conservative women dont have this problem.
_____________
They sure do, Their spouses bring it home.
If a person knew that the person they were about to have sex with had AIDS, would they still have sex with that person even with a condom?
46 and hasn’t had the chance to have children.
???????
“Wrong, look up the facts about male female transmission. It does not occur and has not happened.”
Don’t tell us you “read it on the internets”.
That was one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read on FR.
“There is only one type of sex HIV is transmitted which is why it is primarily a male homosexual disease.”
It can be transmitted by vaginal sex but it is rare.
I studied it when the homosexual mafia was preaching it would explode in the hetro popultions. Never happened because it doesn’t transmit.

Reading comprehension, much?
