Some 252 million years ago, Earth almost died.
In the oceans, 96 percent of all species became extinct. It’s harder to determine how many terrestrial species vanished, but the loss was comparable.
This mass extinction, at the end of the Permian Period, was the worst in the planet’s history, and it happened over a few thousand years at most — the blink of a geological eye.
On Thursday, a team of scientists offered a detailed accounting of how marine life was wiped out during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction. Global warming robbed the oceans of oxygen, they say, putting many species under so much stress that they died off.
And we may be repeating the process, the scientists warn. If so, then climate change is “solidly in the category of a catastrophic extinction event,” said Curtis Deutsch, an earth scientist at the University of Washington and co-author of the new study, published in the journal Science.

The planet isn’t going anywhere. WE are!
We’re going away. Pack your shit, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Maybe a little Styrofoam … The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet’ll shake us off like a bad case of fleas.
The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed. And if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice toward plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?”

To put it into perspective, and giving them the benefit of the doubt, a few thousand years is 3,000 years. 3,000 years ago, Jesus was still A thousand years away from being born.
Think of how much has happened in between then and now and recognize that this is the “emergency” they’re trying to solve NOW.

But, but I remember reading news reports of fossilized finds of ancient cultures! A hammer or a brass bar found in ancient limestone! fossilized carved wood! Ancient submerged cities found off the coast of Peru!

Our US culture is pretty good at preserving our environment
and man alone cannot influence of prevent extinction events on the earth. Thank goodness for that.
What did the fauna do at the end of the Permian-Triassic period? Gas themselves by too much shit to cause global warming? The humans were not around then? Or was it a huge meteor or volcanic activity?
Its the sun stupid. The largest driver of climate change and all we can do is get ahead of the curve and ride it out, you science fools. Get out of politics and stay in the lab.

I read this to mean critters that were dependent on CO2 to form shells suffered the most when CO2 levels fell, and critters who couldn't actively 'breathe' suffered when with the lower O2 levels they couldn't pump enough of the depleted oxygen into their systems.
This is a re-hash of a ‘study’ done years ago.
