Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination.
The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesnt matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided.

Where is lettuce grown?
Lettuce is the vegetable used mainly in salads and it is usually served fresh and uncooked. About 70 percent of the country’s commercial lettuce crop comes from California. The cool Salinas Valley in the central part of the state produces head lettuce nearly the year around.
Consumers who have ANY TYPE of romaine lettuce in their home should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick.
Back in 1977, I worked in Durango, Mexico on a boiler installation in a paper mill. The interiors of boilers can be cavernous and have lots of dark corners in different parts of the equipment. It was the ONLY boiler in the world I worked on that have piles of human waste inside. I worked in power plants in about 12 countries, too.
All Italian lettuce or just Romaine?
Romaine lettuce is not safe to eat, CDC warns U.S. consumers

The CDC alert, issued just two days before Americans sit down for their Thanksgiving dinners, reported that 32 people in 11 states have become sick from eating contaminated romaine. Of those, 13 have been hospitalized, with one patient suffering from a form of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.
The origin of the outbreak is unknown and remains under investigation. The CDC did not limit the warning to romaine from any particular agricultural area.
A common strain of E.coli was detected in six of the sickened people, and appears to match the bacterial strain found in an outbreak of illnesses from contaminated leafy greens late last year that affected people in both the U.S. and Canada. That outbreak was declared over in January.
Five people died in the most recent major outbreak from contaminated romaine, which lasted from March to June of this year and led to 210 cases in 36 states. That outbreak was traced to the Yuma, Ariz. growing region, but investigators never conclusively
I think the canals are infested with e-coli and romaine must really be susceptible.
“Romaine can trap a lot of dirt while it grows.”
That was the first reason that came to my mind. That stuff is so tightly wrapped within itself that I wash the crap (no pun intended) out of every single leaf when I prepare it. We don’t eat it much, though.
This recall is weird. Seems like there’s a bigger issue this time.
Mexico City has pollution so bad you can actually measure PPM human feces in the air.
More like wildlife and municipalities along the river way. They know it is coming from the canals.
The CDC is afraid to say it was caused by illegals. They don’t know which illegal is the carrier because the harvest crews go from farm to farm without any documentation with which to follow and ID them. Now, we’re letting in 10k more invaders.
Remember when the not so funny comedian George Lopez’s main theme for an HBO special was Hispanic produce pickers wiping their butts with lettuce that was going to the gringos.
“Just had a nice Caesar salad yesterday.”
We love our Costco Caesar salads. I guess they’ll be going away.
You're probably right regarding the run-of-the-mill iceberg lettuce varieties. But Romaine is actually very high in some nutrients, including vitamins C, K and A.
FOX news announced it earlier today.
Terrorism?
See my very old tagline.
Did illegals JUST start farming and harvesting produce in the U.S.?
I know what you're getting at (and agree with much of it,) but there is a new factor involved here.
Cough, cough, illegals. The CDC can’t bring themselves to say that.
Now the easily influenced and hypochondriacs will take every burp, belly growl and fart as evidence that they are dying.
“you can actually measure PPM human feces in the air.”
Oh, dear...
