Romaine lettuce is not safe to eat, CDC warns U.S. consumers...

Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination.

The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesn’t matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided.

Just had a nice Caesar salad yesterday. No ill effects yet. Gotta die from something, eventually.

Hey, how ‘bout a salad dressing that checks in at 80 proof? That’d kill the bugs!

from virtually the same article in the WaPo last April:

“Contamination can occur on the farm when birds make frequent flights overhead or low-lying fields flood with contaminated water. E. coli can also be spread by farmworkers who don’t wash their hands or via farm equipment that has manure on it.

“Once the greens are picked, they move to a packaging plant, where they’re exposed to more workers and more equipment. Product from multiple farms is often bagged in the same facility, which further increases the odds of cross-contamination.

“While packers frequently rinse lettuce with a chlorine wash to kill pathogens, studies have shown those sprays are only partly effective. The same is true of washing fruits and vegetables at home, Tauxe said, because pathogens “cling” to the surface of produce and can even enter the inside of a leaf or fruit after they’ve been cut open.”

that may not be enough:

“While packers frequently rinse lettuce with a chlorine wash to kill pathogens, studies have shown those sprays are only partly effective. The same is true of washing fruits and vegetables at home, Tauxe said, because pathogens “cling” to the surface of produce and can even enter the inside of a leaf or fruit after they’ve been cut open.

“There’s no “kill step” that destroys pathogens for foods eaten raw, as there is for a well-done burger or a glass of pasteurized milk.

Lettuce is really a useless thing in a diet anyway, no calories, almost no nutrients, and there are much better sources for what it does have.

I guess you didn’t read the memo, comrade. It said, ALL Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat. Don’t make me have to report you to the authorities!

Is your back yard open to bird droppings? If so you’re not immune.

Let’s put them in the lettuce fields so we can actually eat the food the farmworkers pick.

Or round up all the illegals doing the picking, deport them and profer serious charges against those companies who hire them. Time to giterdun.

When I was last down Yuma way they DID have those big potty trailers with full wash stations attached. The signs on the doors were in both English and Spanish saying “Wash Your Hands”.

I don’t know what the issue is, but this seems odd to me.

All Romaine lettuce??? Can’t the CDC be more specific, or is this an example of H. L. Mencken’s definition of the purpose of modern government?

Once again, lettuce growers, may I remind you to put outhouses in the fields so your migrant workers don’t simply drop trou like they did south of the border?
