That is a great letter. When we had a cabin in the Sierras we saw the exact same thing. Forrest full of downed wood, rotting and dry and just waiting for a spark. Our fire insurance was ridiculous then, I can imagine what it is now.

some of the things mentioned here might be originally southern but we had them in other geographic areas.. (chicken fried steak, apple butter etc) so I never attributed them to south per se

RE: downed wood in forests.. Policy here is that you are breaking the law if you remove things(drift wood, firewood, pretty rocks etc) from national or state parks..and if the rangers “catch you” you get a heavy fine. I recall once a ranger approached a young couple whose children were collecting fall leaves and instructed them to NOT take them out of park

Stupidity and in many cases power hungry rangers. Many of them could not get into regular law enforcement and this was another option. Most of the worse are women. Many truly love nature and outdoors and chose this over civilian LEO.

stupid rules for sure. They could have once a week .. CLEAN US OUT days to have people come with chainsaws etc. I am sure liability is one issue.

In the areas where I walk my dogs near my home isn national park. Due to the heavy canopy there is very little super dry wood. most damp to soggy

Been thinking about what exit said about these fires moving so fast. That’s the first thing that struck me when I read the stories. We had a cabin in the middle of the Sequoia National Forest. Lots of forest fires through the years, because of forest mismanagement. But none of them spread that quickly. The one time we had to evacuate we had at least one day’s notice. People were able to get their horses down the hill, taking a couple of trips. So being burned while in your car? I just don’t get that. Some could be attributed to Santa Ana winds but not in the North.

That’s crazy, you can’t even remove leaves? Yeah big government overreach.

We had lots of Old Logging roads that I used to hike on. The logging companies made them decades ago but of course they hadn’t been used in a long time. There was some areas where the logging companies had replanted and they were a good size and looked pretty good. Of course the first fire forest fire took it all out.

For a number of years their policy was to put out every fire. And to have no prescribed burns. The Giant Sequoia seeds were only dispersed with heat, via a forest fire. So from that era there were no baby giant sequoias sprouted. Which is unfortunate because they take a long time to grow. And the giant sequoias have something in their bark that helps them survive a forest fire. A normal forest fire, not one with intense Heat because no fire had been allowed to burn for numerous decades. So now they’re putting in danger these beautiful trees.

50 USC 1701 - the first entry - is very interesting...

“Unusual and extraordinary threat; declaration of national emergency; exercise of Presidential authorities”

Which has text:

“(a) Any authority granted to the President by section 1702 of this title may be exercised to deal with any unusual and extraordinary threat, which has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States, to the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States, if the President declares a national emergency with respect to such threat. (b) The authorities granted to the President by section 1702 of this title may only be exercised to deal with an unusual and extraordinary threat with respect to which a national emergency has been declared for purposes of this chapter and may not be exercised for any other purpose. Any exercise of such authorities to deal with any new threat shall be based on a new declaration of national emergency which must be with respect to such threat.”
