I run into that a lot with the 18th century poetry. The handwriting was a real learning experience. I’ve been trying to hire a deep toned male actor for audio recordings and trying to figure out how to prepare the text for him so that he’ll pronounce the words correctly. Saved by the frustration that he never calls back when he promises and I fear I’m going to have to start a real search for a narrator.

Mairdie, I have been a compulsive researcher all my life. I spent about three years on that Dickinson project... have moved on to other things I guess. I lost my fascination for genealogy; for one thing, my mother - the active genealogist but unable to travel much - took my mountains of research and published much of it in the Virginia Genealogist Magazine -- without even mentioning my name! I understand: she had worked feverishly on that line for a long time and was well known in American Colonial research circles; she just got excited and published to get it all out in print. Still, it deflated my sails considerably.

I use my own genealogy tree to store all the historical research I do, and I’m always looking to connect trees to figure out who knew who and why. The profs I work with have never used genealogy and love having someone who will try to make those connections for them. I’ve currently got 24,748 individuals in the tree and I use it all the time. Makes history SO much more understandable to know that Alexander Hamilton is the husband of the 2nd cousin, once removed, of John Jay.

Yes, phonetic spelling is a challenge - and all those linguistic symbols like you see in dictionaries now are for the elites - who can remember all that if you don't use it regularly? As to the voice, 25 years ago I could have been a candidate, started out on radio in the 60's - having had voice training. Now I sound like a wet dishcloth. :^/

I agree with JockoManning. mairdie, might I suggest turning off all the news channels, papers, etc? A steady bombardment of that crap really tends to depress oneself. I used to OD on news programs and it had that effect on me.
I've found that I am better informed by tuning out the national news media because most of the stuff they are peddling is garbage for the most part. Plus, by NOT watching or listening to them serves to take away their power and I am able to keep myself incredibly positive. :)
btw, I find that alternative news sources are much more reliable.

One of the early faults I found in the research of others is not to record accurately sources: record, date, place, recorder. It sounds like you know how to build a 'tree'. The genealogy I overturned was a rather famous genealogist in Colonial circles; I think it never occurred to him that technology would make access to records much easier. He simply fabricated elaborate connections, of course tracing lines back to noble connections.
He claimed that the silver at the Dickinson mansion in Delaware was given to the family by King James - the one whose name is on the Bible. I showed that it was colonial silver, and I never found the ancestor in St. Andrew Holborn Parish, N London who received that Royal gift... might have happened, but I never found him.
The family DID trace back to Staffordshire apparently, and they did marry into the noble Dudley family. Unhappily, the girls were having babies every 9 months and fifteen minutes to unknown fathers - registered in the parish register as filius populii a child of the people! 😏
Which is also . . . a belief. And it is a belief with dreadful consequences.
