We have kids but send them to private school. Still have to pay for public school so we pay extra. We take opportunity to influence the public school by educating ourselves on and voting for the school board. It is really the only option we have. That and reining in the bureaucrats who want to build extreme campuses. And the illegal immigration adds even more weight to their budgets. But as a society it is important to have an educated population even if one doesn’t have kids. An educated population will be the doctors, nurses, engineers etc. and will affect your life at some point. Even those of us with kids are not guaranteed they will be able to take care of us in our old age. Someone’s kids will be doing that and I for one want them educated. I think there are so many options that can be used rather than just the government schools but I do see a place
If I thought for one second that the children were actually being educated in public schools, that would be different. But they aren’t (with few exceptions). The schools want warm bodies to create money for the administrators....that’s about it in a nutshell.
My husband works at a local high school. I KNOW what goes on. And I RESENT paying for it.
I’m guessing the illegal children we are forced to babysit (because they are not interested in learning) will take care of me in my old age ? LOL

If your project needed $20 million in funding and you had to send someone to appear before the US Senate to get it, would you choose Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer or the beloved children’s television show host Fred “Mr.” Rogers? I imagine most people would choose Ballmer for his energy, experience closing big deals, and, more importantly, his aggressive go-getter style. Mr. Rogers, on the other hand, was mild-mannered, talked slowly, and the epitome of the nice-guy approach. It’s easy to think his gift was communicating with children, not adults. It’s easy to assume he had no place in the world of money, power, and influence. It’s easy to be mistaken. In 1969, Fred Rogers addressed the Senate for a mere six minutes and ensured $20 million in funding for PBS. How’d he do it? With authenticity and emotional intelligence.
Anyone who is authentic and emotionally intelligent can use this to have great influence over others. When used to influence others, emotional intelligence requires knowing your strengths and your present emotional state (self-awareness); knowing how to manage the moment you are in (self-management); knowing what’s important to your audience and how they’ll perceive your message (social awareness); and knowing how to forge a connection with decision makers (relationship management). These skills can be developed individually through simple practice.
On the 1st of May in 1969, Mr. Rogers addressed the Senate to argue that $20 million in funding for PBS should not be cut. John Pastore, the Senator from Rhode Island who led the hearing, had never seen nor hear of Mr. Rogers’ television show. It took Mr. Rogers just six minutes to convince the gruff and impatient Senator from Rhode Island that the $20 million was well worth it.

Kanye. Too bad. I was kinda suspicious all along. I’m thinking this is another instance of follow the money. Meaning good ‘ol Kanye got a ton of publicity out of this whether he truly believed in Trump or was just faking it.
Back when Paul and I were first married, I took my first master’s in education, planning to home school our children. Didn’t work out that way, though the education major was still useful for teaching adults. I did send my niece thru our local high school, but I read her homework and talked to her constantly. I have such deep respect for those who choose home schooling. Next to that, definitely private schools. But it sounds like you’re still forced to closely oversee what they’re being taught.
I gave my niece’s son the full set of JAG DVDs, which he loved. So I collected the whole set of W.E.B. Griffin’s army books, and got the strangest stare when I presented them. Then I realized that he didn’t read for pleasure at all. His whole focus was the Marine Corps. It’s like the liberal/conservative divide all over again. How can you understand someone who doesn’t read? How will they eventually teach themselves if they don’t read?
I’d happily pay for the education of the next generation if I thought they were actually being educated.
