The Impossible Burger is made from familiar components: a blend of wheat, coconut oil, and potato protein. But the Stanford biochemist who founded the company manufactures the ingredients in such a way as to mimic the aroma, texture, and taste of beef. Think of it as the vegetable version of an industrial canned sausage. The addition of leghemoglobin, a protein found in leguminous plants, is what supposedly imparts some variants of the Impossible Burger with a pink or even bloody interior.

When I was a teenager, they served some “burgers” at the drive-in movies, which contained little, if any, actual meat. I think they were some soybean stuff and flavoring. I loved those!

I get frozen sliders in the local grocery (six count pkg.) I microwave them as soon as I get home...
I got hooked on White Castle many years ago - their store in Brooklyn was the only burger joint in those days open 24 hours, and sliders never taste better than after a long night of beer and shennanigans!
I remember when I was a teenager, the rumor going around then was that McDonald's hamburgers were actually made of ground-up earthworms. Much of what I can remember about that is that my immediate thoughts were "If earthworms taste that good, no wonder fish like them ..."
With all the luck that I ever had fishing .. although I really enjoy doing it .. I would have been better off skipping the middleman and just eating the worms.

We served Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill in the cars that I was usually in...
One time in North Carolina (1973ish) a college acquaintance suddenly became an acquirer of teenage sized bicycles. I asked him “wow, where did you get these bicycles?” And he replied that about a hundred yards away from the drive-in movie theater there was a field and at the end of the field by the road was a ditch and he was driving by the back of the drive-in theater and he noticed the bicycles laying in the ditch. Well, apparently the youngsters rode down to that ditch and parked their bikes and they traversed the field, and got up close enough to the screen to watch the x-rated movies being shown there. I can only imagine their faces when they got back to the ditch and their 10 or so bicycles were missing. I guess it was a windfall for my college friend. What he did with them, I did not ask. but everybody back then was short of money.
This is going to date me, but once upon a time, I thought “Bob’s Big Boy Burgers” were the best burger money could buy. However, for some reason, they are no longer in business. Too bad, because they were the best. I am not familiar with White Castle, but if history is any indicator, “Glory is Fleeting”.
I was at White Castle last week and saw the poster for this, which said the burger was “plant based,” but not much else. I opted for my usual genuine sliders. I’ll try almost anything, though, so maybe next time. I tried their effort at a black bean burger last year because I like black beans, but that was not so great.
Stewart's Sandwiches microwave burgers. I don't even think they refrigerated them.
Bob’s Big Boy was my favorite place to stop when my family vacationed in the west 40-50 years ago. We didn’t have them in the St. Louis area, where I grew up, but there was one in north suburban Chicago some years back, now long gone. The last time I was at one was on the New Jersey Turnpike probably 10-15 years ago.
Coconut oil?
Coconut oil from its usual source, Indonesia, is blamed for the plight of orangutans since their habitat’s being replaced with palm plantations to meet world demand for coconut oil.
Frisch’s Big Boy open 24/7 during finals week when I was in college. Bottomless coffee and filling sandwiches and burgers for study time. Hot fudge cake to celebrate after last exam and it was all over. Fond memories!
When I was in technical training at Fort Benjamin Harrison we trainees would often go into Indianapolis and have White Castle hamburger eating contests. What the heck, we were too young to drink!
A cure in search of a disease. God made perfectly good steers for burger meat. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
That said, yesterday I had a DELICOUS burger at JR’s Texas Bar-B-Q in Sacramento. I don’t know how he seasons the meat, but even the meat is delicious. Don’t even get me started how he cooks it. I love everything well done, and the burger. is thin and perfectly charred.
The all-meat Jailhouse Texas Chili is to die for, but I thought what the heck, lets check out the burger. JR does it again! He nailed it.
