A 22-pound rock that has been propping open a door in Michigan for decades turns out to be a meteorite valued at $100,000, according to Central Michigan University.
Mona Sirbescu, a CMU geology professor, gets asked all the time by people to examine the rocks they bring her but none ever turn out to be an official space rock.
For 18 years, the answer has been categorically no meteor wrongs, not meteorites, Sibescu said in a statement from CMU on Thursday.
But that all changed when she was asked to examine an oddly shaped large rock that a Michigan man, who didnt want to be named, had had in his possession for the last 30 years.

The farmer said that it had come down onto the property in the 30s and it made a heck of a noise when it hit, the new owner recalled him saying, according to CMUs statement. In the morning, the farmer and his father found the crater and dug out the still-warm meteorite.

Man in VA during the 1800’s had a large rock as a door stop. If I recall it weighed 6 pounds. He had it there for years having found it on his property. Turns out it was a 6 pound piece of gold. He found more on his property.

And BTW, those pics posted are of Stephen King. Leslie Nielsen played a different character in that flick. Bad guy, offed Ted Danson and some girl, then received his just desserts.
"Creepshow" was a popular flick when I was a kid.

I want the doorstop rock that started the Carolina Gold Rush:
The Carolina Gold Rush, the first gold rush in the United States, followed the discovery of a large gold nugget in North Carolina in 1799, by a 12-year-old boy named Conrad Reed. He spotted the nugget while playing in Meadow Creek on his family's farm in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.[2]:11 [3] Conrad took the 17 lb gold nugget home to show his father. However, gold was not commonly seen in their community and the value of the nugget was not understood. The nugget was used as a door stop in the family's home for several years. In 1802, Conrad's father, John Reed, showed the rock to a jeweler, who recognized it as gold and offered to buy it. Reed, still unaware of the real value of his "doorstop," sold it to the jeweler for $3.50 (approximately one week's pay for a farm laborer at that time).

Heh. Wouldn't surprise me if King is financing it. He does an awful lot like that with his money.
Awhile back, the local town library got an "anonymous" multi-million dollar donation when it desperately needed some maintenance work. Anon, yeah right. Like anyone else in Bangor Maine has millions of dollars to toss around.
King is a liberal kook, but he does a lot of good with his money, and I commend him for it.

This is a nice departure from the (seemingly) usual thing the doorstop turns out to be - some piece of live ordnance.

King is a liberal kook, ... Anyone who writes stuff like he does has to have a few screws loose...................
Edgar Allen Poe, in addition to being a writer of strange tales, was an amateur astronomer.
He actually 'solved' a problem that had plagued astronomers for hundreds of years: "Since space has a near infinite number of stars, Why is space dark? It should be white."
Answer: The light from the farthest stars has not arrived here yet.................
