Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens on Thursday said that he does not believe President Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh should be confirmed to the high court.
Stevens told a small crowd in Boca Raton, Fla., he once believed Kavanaugh to be qualified, but his performance in Senate Judiciary hearings changed his mind, according to The Palm Beach Post.
Ive changed my views for reasons that have no relationship to his intellectual ability, Stevens said, noting Kavanaugh's fiery denial of sexual misconduct accusations in a Senate Judiciary Hearing last week.
The Senators should pay attention to this, Stevens added.
Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, a lifelong Republican, told a small crowd in Boca Raton that Judge Brett Kavanaughs performance at confirmation hearings should disqualify him. The Senators should pay attention to this.
Lulu Ramadan (@luluramadan) October 4, 2018 Stevens said that criticism over Kavanaugh's temperament for the court following the heated testimony before the panel had merit.
Kavanaugh's nomination has been mired by three women accusing him of varying degrees of sexual misconduct from when he was in high school and in college.
Kavanaugh has fiercely denied all the allegations.
Last week, Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the first of the three accusers, testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in a hearing.
Kavanaugh offered a blistering denial of any wrongdoing and often engaged in tense exchanges with Democrats on the committee. At one point he asked Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) if she had ever blacked out from drinking after she asked him the same question.
The nominees conduct during the hearing caught the attention of many on the left, who cited his temperament as another reason to vote no on his confirmation. Klobuchar later said that if she was in his courtroom and acted like that, he would have thrown me out.
The FBI returned results of a week-long investigation into the allegations to the Senate on Thursday.
Senate Republicans claim that there was no corroborating evidence for any of the claims against Kavanaugh and have vowed to confirm the nominee in a vote over the weekend.
Stevens, a nominee of former President Ford, retired in 2010. He was replaced by President Obama nominee Elena Kagan.
Isn’t this the guy who every now and then goes on about how much of a fraud the NRA is trying to perpetuate concerning the Second Amendment?
Stevens has apparently never been publicly maligned for things he never did. Kavanaugh gave vent to justifiable (and righteous) anger due to the ongoing, hyperpartisan smear the democrats were orchestrating.
A judge, when acting as an officer of the law, must maintain an even demeanor (unlike RBG). When reacting to a blatant smear, they need to act like a man (or woman, as the case may be).
Stevens is full of shiite.
Why is that decrepit old sh*t still sucking oxygen???
Who care what this has-been has to say. He has screwed the country enough.
After the treatment he received by the democrats, I doubt very seriously that Kavanaugh will turn into a liberal squish like Stevens, Souter or Kennedy. He will remember this every time he makes a decision. Im hoping he ends up to the right of Thomas. Im confident that he will be to the right of Kennedy.
If Judge Kavanaugh had a history of being a fiery lunatic on the bench, I would think that would be well established by now.
The fact that our next Supreme Court justice demonstrated the ability to get mad as hell when falsely accused of serious crime is the sign of a strong and decent man. If I recall correctly the calm and clear response was provided. It was AFTER the Left made his (and his family’s) life a living hell that he showed anger. And he damn well should have.
Maybe the former justice Stevens should drink less soy milk. Jackass.
Liberals' latest argument is almost comical. "We tried to destroy Brett Kavanaugh's personal and professional reputation with totally baseless charges that he is a serial gang rapist. We failed and now we're worried that he won't give our liberal causes a fair shake in the Supreme Court. Can you please nominate someone different?"
As Cocaine Mitch once said...
Who cares?
Drop dead, Stevens.
Couldn’t be more inappropriate.
Too bad he doesn’t get a vote.
I’ll bet he didn’t have much, if any problem(s) with Barack Hussein Obama, though.
Did he stay silent on Barack for 8 years like W?
His opinion and $4.50 can get him the Early Bird Special. Before 4:30 p.m. You know what that costs you after 4:30 p.m.?
No, I don’t have respect for someone still going leftist at that age. Way past time to have seen how this country is circling the toilet. Guess he spends his whole day watching CNN, MSNBC, reading The New York Times, etc.
If he said he supported Kavanaugh I doubt they would have reported it.
They're grasping for anything now.
Justice Stevens is not a person whose opinion I value. I think he’s just acting out on sour grapes that there would be no such gathering of loyalty and love for him as has come about for Judge Kavanaugh and his family and their friends.
Republicans have had many chances to have a truly conservative court. O’Conner, Souter, Stevens, just a few of the RINOs that the moderate country club GOP has burdened us with.
GOP better learn to fight. I understand that the Bush’s and McConnell wanted Kav over Barrett so we wonder if he is a real conservative vote like Scalia was may he R.I.P.
Ive changed my views for reasons that have no relationship to his intellectual ability,
So Kavanaugh is qualified. That’s all I needed to know.
At age 20, Stevens was the reason that I foolishly voted for Carter over Ford. The guy is a waste.
Shut up you old RINO coot! Go take your dementia meds.
Good GAWD, hold the vote and confirm BK so @seholes like this stupid codger will shut the h*ll up!
