At the Most Important Confirmation Hearing in 25 Years, Republicans Blew It
National Review ^ | September 27, 2018 | Rich Lowry

Christine Blasey Ford was compelling and sympathetic. Clearly, she sincerely believes her account. But that doesn’t mean it’s correct. She very well could be mistaken about a long-ago memory, which is why Republicans needed to draw out the gaps in her story, walk through how others contradict her, and highlight the complete lack of corroborating evidence. The designated questioner, Rachel Mitchell, failed to do this effectively at all.

Before the hearings started, Chris Wallace was saying how his daughters told him some things that happened to them in high school that they didn’t talk about before, so therefore, his conclusion was that Ford could be telling the truth. What he didn’t say was if his daughters told anyone else.

He wrote this after her testimony and before his.

So it's a comment on her performance, and not on the whole day.

Silly of him to comment before the day was over.

The lawyer questioning Ford was respectful and low key. This was good. Kavenaugh came out full blast as hurt and angry and believable. He is this.

The crux of all of this is the allegations are unprovable. If they were provable the nomination would have been dead meat back in July. Thus the important thing was not to disprove her allegations but to establish the truth and honesty of Judge Kavenaugh.

It should be noted that each supposed witness that Ford spoke of denied her testimony. Ford is lying or psychologically off. I think she is lying. If she is psychologically off she is to be pitied. I do not think she is this and thus a very bad person.

When this is all over, I wish Kavenaugh would go after these women that have accused him of horrible crimes. If he is confirmed he will not. If he is not confirmed he will. It is the only way to clear his name.

He did well. He will be confirmed.

A big problem was her failure to identify the person who brought her to the house.

Why would she refuse? Only because such identification would reflect badly on her or get the driver fired.

No, that is not why the driver was not named.

By “forgetting” certain details, it becomes impossible for those details to be checked.

Name the driver and he/she says incredulously “What? I never went to any party with her” and what happens then to her blockbuster story?

Just as she can not remember the house.

Hard to remember a house you never were in.

She also did not know who paid for the lie detector test.

To me this is a clear signal that she is being financed by a group of never trumpers and that she has been coached.

People like that pay bills only for those who will deliver a predicted result.

The first question I would ask fake Wallace is...

Did your daughters hide this information from the six FBI investigations they went through?

OH. they did not get investigated six times by the FBI?

Well then you should realize you are comparing apples and oranges....Or lions and mice...or something

Her approach was to get Blasey on the record for a number of questions as if the Committee majority would have access to evidence with which to contradict her later.
If they don’t have access to such evidence, then yes it was not a good showing.
But the Republicans may have other evidence justifying such a strategy, so this remains to be seen

What later??? It's all over but the votin'...

The Republicans could have discredited her testimony, but chose not to...

I don't fault the Democrats because we know this is what they always do...Always...

Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. He wrote this after Ford testified and before Kavanaugh did. I guess he wanted to get out there early, but he should have waited. In retrospect it looks like he was shortsighted and wrong.
