People in a nearby fishing boat noticed the crash and called for help. They also flagged down the boat operator who hit her, officials stated.
"I just hope there wasnt some chemicals or intoxication involved given its a holiday weekend," area resident Juan Barrera said.
The boat was believed to be an "approximately 50-foot power vessel," sheriff's Lt. Deryl Walker told the Los Angeles Times. The operator of the boat, along with a woman who was on board, were cooperating with law enforcement, authorities said.
Furthermore, there was no evidence of a crime, according to officials.

There a number of kayak rentals near that location.
Most of the renters know what they are doing.
I suspect one didn’t.
Paddle boarders and Kayakers and Wave Runners/Jet skis are invisible to large fast boats, just like motorcycles...................
From two days ago another kayak accident that killed 4.
I wonder if more people get killed by kayak accidents than mass shootings.

They are the bicyclists of the waterways.
My kayak is hunter orange for a reason. And I stick close to shore so I can scramble out of the way if circumstances require.
Guaranteed there was alcohol or drugs involved. Wish they’d enforce a zero tolerance of alcohol on boats. They’re crazy every holiday weekend in front of my house.
Back when I had my boat, we came upon a paddle-boarder LAYING DOWN ON HIS BOARD ASLEEP in the middle of a busy waterway. Had I not been paying strict attention, we would have ran him over...........
And AF Major was killed on a kayak AT NIGHT in the Gulf a few years back, the authorities theorize he was run over by a big power boat that probably didn’t even know they had................
Here in Florida, a DUI on a boat is the same as in a car..................
While PWC have a higher profile than paddleboards and kayaks, it is like being on a motorcycle in traffic.
I live on a lake and have a PWC. I only take it out on off/weekdays, almost never on weekends.
Here We have rentals that tourists rent by the hour. Every year, one or more get killed because they do not know the rules, or they can’t handle them properly. Have had a few run into things like docks and bridges because they can’t stop in time..................
But it’s after the fact. Have the lake patrol stop boats to search for open containers and drunks. People act like fools the minute they step onto boats even without alcohol or drugs.
[familiar with Marina del Rey] The channel @ MDR is like a “T” with the vertical stroke of the T hollow. The top stroke of the T faces the ocean, which is usually stupid calm down there. Very low winds, low waves.
I would bet that the powerboat had chugged down the channel at slow speed and then gave it the gas when the way out to the ocean was clear. Maybe the bow came up some and they lost visibility on the surface.
Im a big kayaker
Went this weekend with kids in the boat
No stupid life jackets
Now yes I have right of way over power boats but Im not stupid
I give thrm plenty of way
Bottom line
Hitting anything with your power boat especially a kayak is inexcusable
I feel bad for that person who got killed and the clueless boater
Multiple lives ruined

My Kawasaki is my only boat and I have it rigged for fishing. I’m not into the splashing and jumping tricks, not with my back. When I’m not fishing, I tour around with the gf on back, like a motorcycle.
Here in IL a DUI in a boat is the same as a car.

“No stupid life jackets”
Life jackets are not stupid. I hope you have something on hand when on the water. Its not law on non-motor boats, but it is recommended and smart.
Very true, especially tourists.................
Years ago we were coming into Marine Del Rey in my B-I-L’s 38’ Sailboat.
We were manipulating the Spinnaker under Wind because the Engine had died, so we couldn’t just slow down quickly if needed.
What amazed me is how many People with small Boats and Skiffs would pull right in front of us in the Channel. They seem to think that our large Boat could Brake and Handle like a Car.
We had to do a lot of maneuvering to get the Boat safely Docked and those Idiots didn’t make it any easier.
