However, the high number might not be entirely reflective of how many kids actually have ADHD, said Dr. Scott Benson, a psychiatrist at the Creekside Psychiatric Center in Pensacola, Florida.
Many children, especially those living in poverty or dealing with challenges at home, may struggle to focus. That's natural given the stressors they're dealing with, but it may cause some doctors to question whether the child has ADHD.
Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity are symptoms of ADHD, according to the American Psychiatric Association.
"We know one of the common errors is misdiagnosis," said Benson, who was not involved with the study. "So at first blush, it just looks like the kid's not paying attention. The second time, you realize the child is struggling with deep anxiety so he's not going to respond to ADHD treatment."

So, they medicate the kids who can't sit still.
I do not believe in most of these learning disabilities. Except for IQ differences and a need for children to be actively engaged in learning experiences and to have free time and physical activity, very few children have "disabilities". I worked at a high-end learning center for a few years. It's amazing how these disabilities disappeared in a quite room with appropriate work and children expected to get it right.
Sandwich (PB&J, or bologna or tuna) and a bowl of soup for lunch and a glass of milk.
Supper....meat potatoes, vegetable and glass of milk. Didn't each much bread.
NO SODA. NO SNACKS IN BETWEEN.
Cookies, ice cream, cake were a treat....not an everyday thing.
And we played till the street lights went on.
No homework Kindergarten to 8th grade....
These kids need protein and you don't get it from vegies.
P.S. I'm 75....5'4"...116 lbs...BP 108/68....and have a degree in engineering.
Awww I slaughtered his name.
Fung.
That’s because back then there were repercussions for bad behavior. Today you get coddled and told it’s not your fault that you screwed up. Then they blame your parents, society, skin color and through pills at you.
I wanted to do something to help kids with that problem but I got distracted and lost interest.
I just tell my boys to act like girls in the class so they dont get in truoble
Doesnt reaaly work but kinda does

To say yes maam
But I guess thats trouble now too
... because 80 percent of teachers are boring.
Just like Statins. Doctors over-prescribe everything. If they had their way, we would all be doped up on drugs 24/7.
Maybe physical activity is the big difference. We walked to school, sat for 2 hours, ran around on a blacktop (no playground equipment), sat for 2 more hours, ate lunch and then ran around again, sat again and then walked home. No one just sat all day, first in a car and then in a classroom.
1. what did people do before adhd was diagnosed.
2. maybe it was less common?
All of those drugs from the 60s and 70s took their toll?
“All of those drugs from the 60s and 70s took their toll?”
More like all those airy-fairy psychologists took their toll, with their fluffy advice on how to raise kids, e.g., without discipline. When I was a kid, I’d have killed for five minutes of “time out” instead of a smack on the butt.
When I went to school, no kids had ADHD. Some boys were “hyper”. They became less hyper as they got older. They weren’t pumped with toxic drugs to neuter or zombify them. They were boys and grew into men.
Same here.
38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].
39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.
Only two drugs when I was a kid....aspirin and penicillin.
We also had Iodine, Mercurochrome and peroxide.
Of course there's the dear brother who insisted on trying a leach on my leg boo boo.
My daughters doctor believed if the kids just ran a lap around the school every hour the ADHD issue would be managed
Me too. And from my teachers too. The threat anyway.
I used to be one of those kids diagnosed as ADHD. I quit taking all medication except the allergy medal because the allergies do affect how well I can breathe. As for children? give them something to do. Have them do some work in the house with you and make sure that they exercise. Nowadays people look at drugs as too ready of a solution. I do believe some children are severely impaired, but I also believe that’s a small sliver of the total as well.
