However, the high number might not be entirely reflective of how many kids actually have ADHD, said Dr. Scott Benson, a psychiatrist at the Creekside Psychiatric Center in Pensacola, Florida.
Many children, especially those living in poverty or dealing with challenges at home, may struggle to focus. That's natural given the stressors they're dealing with, but it may cause some doctors to question whether the child has ADHD.
Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity are symptoms of ADHD, according to the American Psychiatric Association.
"We know one of the common errors is misdiagnosis," said Benson, who was not involved with the study. "So at first blush, it just looks like the kid's not paying attention. The second time, you realize the child is struggling with deep anxiety so he's not going to respond to ADHD treatment."

ADHD is a huge industry.
Watched a Dr Jason Frum youtube video the other day. He was talking about all the kids being given snacks and tons of fruit juice. Kids are developing TYpe 2 diabetes and ADHD.
Take the monetary reward out of it ...then the school districts won’t have the incentive to encourage misdiagnosis... and watch the % drop.
The shrink who invented ADHD later admitted that he was wrong. A multi-billion dollar industry built on a lie.
Funny. In the 70s when I grew up there was no such thing as ADHD. I did not know one single kid who was on drugs because of their behavior.
We all survived and didnt go on killing sprees.
And each of them are a revenue stream for the big-government/big-pharmaceutical criminal complex.
Give boys who act like boys Ritalin. That’s what it’s all about.
And what, 85% are boys?
Boys need activity other than sitting at a desk like a zombie for six hours.
Supposedly, illegals coach their kids on how to act like they have ADHD....so they can collect the monthly checks.
They can drug their "behavior problems" into little, stumbling zombies, and, since no one actually checks on their performance, they can be utter failures as teachers, and no one expects anything. Then, teachers can retire at 55, with 100% of their excessive income and campaign for whatever Socialist candidates their union says to...
Public schools are geared for little girls...sit in your seat, be quiet, do assigned academic activities. Anyone who deviates from this perfect atmosphere has ADHD. Drugs to make boys act like quiet little girls were prescribed to keep the teachers happy.
Funny, I was watching a Dr. Jason Fung and he said the same thing!
A part, perhaps a large part of the ADHD “crisis” is caused by parents who do not know how to parent. Their kids become almost feral without guidance.
I could go on a piss off a bunch of liberal FReepers so I’ll shutup.
BUMP!
When I was a kid, ADHD was spelled BRAT.
We chose to SPANK our boys, so never a need to drug them, or have them diagnosed with ADD.
“Supposedly, illegals coach their kids on how to act like they have ADHD....so they can collect the monthly checks.”
The ‘legals’ also do it in Newark, probably everywhere else too. They have a term for the money they get (due to the ‘disabilities’ of the kids): CRAZY CHECKS!
“Funny, I was watching a Dr. Jason Fung and he said the same thing!”
Please SHUT YOUR TRAP. A multi-TRILLION dollar industry (big med, big ag, big government) depends on people NOT listening to Dr. Fung (and Dr. Berry, and others).
So, please, for the health of entire ‘industries’, in fact, entire segments of our economy, PLEASE keep quiet. I realize, too, that millions of Americans are suffering and dying to protect these operations, but who are we to get in the way of people’s livelihoods? Too much money at stake...
Sure glad I wasn't medicated!
B.A. and M.S., retired at 62 and won't touch my IRA til 71.
