ESPNs NFL preseason ratings fell by more than a quarter on Monday night.
Mondays Ravens-Colts NFL preseason game earned a 1.7 rating and 2.66 million viewers on ESPN, down 26% in both measures from last year (Giants-Browns: 2.3, 3.57M). There was no comparable game in 2016.
Excluding games on NFL Network, the 1.7 rating is the fourth-lowest for any preseason game since 2004. ESPN has aired three of the four lowest rated games over that span, including Jets-Washington on Thursday and Buccaneers-Jaguars last year (1.6 for both).
MNF ranked just sixth for the night in adults 18-49 (0.8) behind ABCs The Bachelor (1.3), USAs WWE Raw (1.1), NBCs American Ninja Warrior (1.0), MTVs Video Music Awards (1.0) and VHIs Love and Hip Hop Hollywood (1.0).
On Saturday, NFL Network posted mixed results for a rare quadrupleheader. Bengals-Cowboys led the way with a 1.0 and 1.6 million, but that was down 9% in ratings and 6% in viewership from last year (Colts-Cowboys: 1.1, 1.7M). Compared to Ravens-Colts in 2016, which aired opposite the Olympics, ratings increased 54% (from 0.7) and viewership 56% (from 1.0M).
The Seahawks-Chargers nightcap had a 0.7 (-13%) and 1.1 million (-15%)...

Between the endless rules changes (always seemingly for the worse), the arbitrary player suspensions by Goodell, Thursday night games, the Color Rush uniforms, the pink uniforms, and the obscene ticket prices, my interest in the NFL was already declining sharply. The politicization of the NFL by the left-wing through their useful idiot, Colin Kaepernick, was just the final straw.
ESPN will not televise the national anthem and the kneelers this year. It’s good that the President informed us about this in his WV speech yesterday, because we haven’t watched ESPN in three years.
Ravens won. The game was hyped because of Andrew Luck’s return from his 2-year shoulder injury hiatus. The other notable thing about the game is that the day before this game the voice of the Colts retired at 78. Lamie <?> so there was another announcer for the game. The highlight reel on Tuesday was about Luck throwing an interception and his claiming he tried to force it. People expect Luck’s return will take the Colts to the playoffs. Others expect Colts to go 8 and 8. I expect Colts to just show up and play since Luck has been away so long.
There will be volumes of books written about the NFL in the next few years. Not about the play on the field, but on dissection of how the league was destroyed. It will start with lost TV Ad revenue due to low ratings. That will be the first Domino to fall.
Why are the cheerleaders wearing granny panties? If that’s the case, better off to put the male cheerleader in shorts.
LOL.
Up yours ESPN and Roger Goodell.
Every sport faces a moment of reckoning when it reaches the point where it feels a need to market itself to casual fans. The NFL is way beyond "casual fans" now. They're now marketing to people who are barely interested in sports at all.
I’d love to see the numbers from 3 years ago.
No, the Ravens won. But its only preseason.
Well, Im still doing fantasy football this year. Our league is in its 35th year. Its out of habit more than anything else.
That is because you are not supposed to look at them ole gals. You are to keep your eye on that purty fruitcake in the center.
He is the new NF,L Granny Panties and Poofters.
35 years? Yikes! This is my 27th year, and I’ve been at it a long time.
I actually considered quitting, as my oldest, biggest money league finally broke up this year. This kneeling crap is part of it. But, I think disgust with the low quality of the play is the bigger issue.
I’m still hanging in... in two leagues. But, MUCH less financial commitment, and interest.
Oh jeez, for real? Queerified cheerleaders? No surprise. Given the number of felons in the league I’m sure this is at least appealing to the players.
ROFLMAO !!! Now that’s funny ...
If fantasy Football dies, the NFL has ZERO chance of survival.
