A massive glowing "rogue" planetary-mass object has been discovered, surprising scientists with not only its size, but also the fact it's not orbiting a star.
The object, named SIMP J01365663+0933473, has a magnetic field more than 200 times stronger than Jupiters and is nearly 13 times the size of the gas giant. At its size, it's right between the size of a planet and a failed star, so scientists will need to study it further to determine exactly what it is.
This object is right at the boundary between a planet and a brown dwarf, or failed star, and is giving us some surprises that can potentially help us understand magnetic processes on both stars and planets, said Caltech graduate student Melodie Kao, who led the study, in a statement.

It’s 20 LIGHT YEARS away.
Yeah but what’s the price of tea in China?
In before the Death Star posts.
Dont point out the reality here....
In before >NOT PLAYING<
It’s not a planet, it’s a brown dwarf.
Calling all Liberals.

It’s a planetary starship!!!
Apparently, its been speeding away from Earth ever since 2016 AD.
lol
Practically our back yard. The light we're seeing from it was emitted after the astronomers studying it were born. Some of them may even have already earned their PhDs ...
The definition of planet includes “orbiting a star.” So this is not a planet, and it’s not rogue.
Is it under the gravitational field of a star, or a large planet? Define “drifting” in a planetary context, and not in an ocean context.
Correct those errors and resubmit your paper.
I saw that artists rendition of the planet the other day and read the article.
No where in the article does it indicate it has a ring of blue flames around it’s top.
Where did the artist get that notion?
Probably was orbiting a star at one time. Then got "kicked out" of it star system by some gravitational disturbance, perhaps a passing star. Can't see how a planet could form outside a star system, but I suppose it's possible. In nature, it seems damn near anything is possible.
Artist’s conception? What the? If the thing is only 20 light years away, why is there no photo?
That’s what I was thinking.
