Woman almost loses leg after infection, disease blamed on pedicure
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — The infection that a North Carolina woman contracted at a 'grade A salon' urged her to issue a warning to other pedicure lovers.
According to a Facebook post, on June 22 Tracy Lynn Martinez went to get a pedicure at her local salon in Winston, North Carolina.
The next day, she said that she had body chills, nausea, and dizziness. She tried to sleep it off but when she woke up her leg had swollen to three times its size.
Martinez called an ambulance and shortly after doctors diagnosed her with a severe case of cellulitis.
Cellulitis is a disease developed from a strep infection coming from a 'callus cutter' which is used to slice the dead skin of the balls of feet.
It took Martinez two weeks in the hospital to reach stabilization and she is now on a three month course of medication along with compression socks that she is required to wear.
She said the salon seemed very clean and the people were nice but she was unaware that the tool they were using to cut the dead skin off the balls of her feet is actually banned in North Carolina, as in many other states.
Martinez urges other salon goers to be cautious of what tools are being used on them. Anything slicing or cutting could lead to infections that last forever.
The go to diagnosis on the show. Thing is MRSA and other types of bacteria are everywhere and 99.9% of the time when exposed to them nothing serious happens. For some reason a type percentage of the population can get a severe reaction.
That’s why I just do my own with an exacto knife here in my desk drawer...
I like my callouses, as I’m barefoot nearly all year. But a knee-replacement operation has me struggling to trim my toe-nails. Do y’all see men at pedicure shops?
My mother took my father, who had Alzheimer’s, to the nail salon every month during the last couple of years of his life. He enjoyed the attention, and it made sure his nails didn’t cause him any discomfort.
And there was a man in the shop - big, athletic build, 40-ish - a couple of months ago when I went.
Mrs. Mad assures me that men go to the shop she frequents.
MRSA is a heavy bacteria in the human olfactory system people have MRSA all the time it has to get into an open cut and fester in order to be deadly i went swimming with diabetic sores on my feet and had to go through 6 months of antibiotics to get rid of the crap Vancomycin saved my life
I chuckle when I hear friends who are diabetic go to the doctor to have their toenails trimmed. I suggest they go to a nail salon instead for a full pedicure which would include a foot massage and nail painting..........and likely cheaper too
$20 for a pedicure at the shop I visit about once every two years. I do my own fingernails, but once in a while, I want a pedicure to get the dead skin off my feet.

I am NOT all that ‘big and burly’ - well BIG & BURLY - but NOT ‘big and burly’ and have been known to frequent a ‘shop’ to get someone to get my toenails.
Funny how one spends his/her younger years ‘biting ones one toenails’, sticking ‘foot in mouth’ on occasion YET reach a certain age and am ‘unable’ to trim ones own toenails no matter how many contortions etc one puts oneself through.
I figured a few years ago if you want to give something to a man who ‘seemingly’ has everything, a ped would be a perfect ‘gift’.
For men it’s called a “sports pedicure”.
I’m not up on all of the terminology. My wife suggested that I go get a “mani-pedi” with her. I told her that is something she can enjoy for herself.
After a few more times of her asking me to join her I finally figured out that a “mani-pedi” meant a manicure and pedicure. I was thinking that in was a “man”-i-pedi, and somehow just thought it was doing the nails - but on a man! (Yeah - I’m slow with this stuff!)
I can still trim my own fingernails and toenails thank you!

Get the toes (I do tip well in these situations) because I just can’t get the ‘right angle’ to deal with the corners etc etc.
(So once a year I ‘git er done’, using a different joint each time - ya know, ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ and all that passe` crap).
BUT you ‘ain’t agonna dip and clip my fingernails’, that is carrying it a tad too far...
You will have to pry those fingernail clippers from my cold, dead, clammy hands...(Right after my pistola)
I use a Dremel tool.
instead of pedicure/nail shops you can simply go to podiatrist if you are just wanting nails and feet taken care of. I used to help an old lady and she would go to get pedicures but i noticed while i waited the shop was unclean/gross in many ways, run by foreignors or at best citizens who didn’t bother speaking much english and let their kids run around while they worked. The receptionist was picking her nose too, ther was food debris stains on waiting area chairs, dust on ledges very noticeable in area of nail color bottle display. I wonder how these places pass inspection if even the waiting area is not simply cleaned let alone foot tubs and tools etc.
ALL : for those of you not able to reach your own toes, strecthing your side, back and front of abs muscles often helps. the psoas muscle many times is part of problem for not being able to fully bring leg up toward body. stretching is important to flexibility as we get older.
MRSA infections from pedicures and threading of the eyebrows are fairly common.
I’m amazed this isn’t more common. I got a pedicure a few years ago. I had serious questions about if the area and equipment were kept sanitized and how much knowledge (if any) the pedicurist had about skin types or how to identify skin ailments.
I go every 5 weeks for a pedicure. I like the attention, but more importantly I don’t wind up with ingrown toenails.
