I was wrong about Trump. I was solidly against him when he was running - knowing that he spent most of his life as a Democrat. I was at the point that I would have almost rather have had a Democrat in office that claimed to be a Democrat than another RINO claiming to be a Republican while ruining the country (not enough to vote for Hillary, or not vote btw). Trump has happily proved me wrong and I am now solidly behind him and happier than I have been, ever, with my president. Hopefully this SC pick proves to be the exact right choice for our times. Prayers are being answered.
Anybody else?
I was for Trump from the beginning. I wanted something different, and I knew if it was Jeb Bush against Hillary I was not going to vote. For the first time in my life I actually volunteered and helped on Election Day doing call reminders to get out the vote. I have been very happy so far. The only complaint I have is he has done nothing to address the deficit or debt, and he hasnt reinstated the combat exclusion for women and homo exclusion for the military. Will vote, and volunteer, again in 2020 for him.
“I myself was a hard core pro choice feminist once.”
In the same vein, I was Young Liberal while growing up in Canada. I can still remember arguing with some Young Conservatives why it was the government’s right to tax the wealthy more to help the downtrodden poor. WOW.
I would love to go back now and talk to that earlier version of me, and also to smack him in the head.
But when he gave his announcement speech at Trump Tower (I watched it that evening on YouTube) and I actually listened to what he said, I was hooked.
So almost overnight, I went from being one slightly contemptuous of Trump to a huge fan.
Through most of 2015, there were many Freepers who continued to maintain that Trump was not a serious candidate and even that he got into the race to help Hillary get elected. I remember one poster in particular posting the wedding photo of Trump with Bill and Hillary over and over again to show us that he was in cahoots with them.
I'm surprised that it's taken so long for certain people to come around on Trump but I'm happy to see new converts and I welcome them.
We are going to need all the votes we can get in November to give Trump the majorities in Congress that he needs to take MAGA to a whole new level.
Name a few, if you please?
Near as I can tell, The Donald is a unique soul and I haven't seen any real ideological clones out there. At least not yet.
Were going to need another Trumpian standard-bearer in 2024 although Id love to see a few dozen arise in these upcoming midterms.
Part of the problem, as I see it, is that openly supporting Trump is toxic (it shouldnt be) and even dangerous (definitely shouldnt be) despite the fact that those who support the Prez do much better than those who dont.
We finally have someone with a non-PC backbone in the White House. He deserves an electorate with a spine, too.
I was for Trump at the first debate, what were there, 15 people on stage?? I would have never voted for Bush or Cruz or Fiorina. My elderly aunt hated Trump, thought he was going to be a Ross Perot type.
Nope, because I never bought into the fearmongering of the GOPe and listened to what Trump was saying and had been saying since the 80s when the discussions of government would be brought up.
Trump was the ONLY one even willing to discuss immigration or the falacy that is the free trade as passed off on the American people.
The rest were and at all owned by the same money men who have both parties in their pockets and want cheap labor, open borders and one world government.
Never understood how anyone fell for RINOs and GOPe shills telling them Trump was a RINO...
From the start of the primary season I was a Cruz guy. But I kept resonating with what Trump was saying, kept laughing at his one liners and pointing them out to my wife. Eventually she just said “You keep saying you’re for Cruz but just admit it, you really like Trump.” I paused and thought about that and realized that my head was for Cruz but in my heart I wanted Trump. And from that point I gave into my heart and went all in for Trump.
I’m glad I voted for him, too. I always liked the way he talked, but voted Cruz in the primary. After Trump became the nominee, I supported him and voted for him. He’s done a lot of good, more than any President since Reagan. Not perfect— I don’t like what ATF is doing, banning gun parts— but a great deal of good has been accomplished, including these 2 Supreme Court picks.
I think your summary is really good, thanks.
It would be interesting to engage a Trump hater on that basis rather than on the usual misinterpretations passed along via the media. Who wouldn’t want a leader with those attributes?
Well, Trump did in the past advocate for banning AR-15s and other rifles that the Left calls “assault weapons.” But I was assured by people who know Don Jr. that DJT had come around on that.
mass defection started much before walkaway.
Trump got elected due to dems and republicans defecting from staus quo of making choices based on usual and realizing they truly had an individual choice to make.
Plenty of other times in history people came to that conclusion, and plenty of times people get lulled back into their slumber too. Hoping people stay awake longer this time.
Trump was not my first (or second) choice in the primaries. I voted for him in the general election, but that was a pretty easy choice. I honestly did not know what Trump would do if elected President, but I had no doubts what Hillary would do if elected.
I have known a lot of wealthy Northeastern Republicans over the years. Nearly all are moderates or liberals. Based on Trump’s stated positions before he decided to run for President, I was pretty sure he fit in the same mold.
I first truly joined the Trump train when he nominated Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Since then, nearly all of his appointments (both judicial and executive) have been strong conservatives. His judicial appointments in particular have been stellar. Now I only hope that he gets to fill a couple more Supreme Court seats, either in his first term or in his second.
I had two issues with him. I thought I couldn’t trust him, and I thought he couldn’t win.
I’m extremely happy to have been proven wrong on both of those. I’m now proud to have voted for him though at the time my vote was more of an anti-Hillary vote than anything else.
Ayn Rand's books changed my life to the extent no other writer even came close to. Before reading her books, I was one of those who was shy about tooting my own horn. I would nod my head affirmatively when others said things like "money is the root of all evil" and would never challenge when liberals would run down capitalism.
Ayn's writings taught me that there was no shame in being successful and in fact, I should wear it as a badge of honor. Her book "Virtue of Selfishness" taught me that the truly selfish people are not the go-getters building wealth for themselves but those who idly sit around expecting others to provide for them.
So the fact that Trump is an Ayn Rand fan makes perfect sense.
Ya. That is not “extreme leftist”.
I never understood the people who refused to (or were hesitant to) support Trump in the general election because of his lack of ideological purity. If Bush I, Dole, Bush II, McCain, and Romney were acceptable candidates (all of whom are or were outright liberals on many issues), there is no reason to find Trump unacceptable. He isn’t a narrow movement conservative ideologue by any means (which may be a good thing), but he’s far better than most of the GOP nominees we’ve had from 1988 on.
I was right from 15 June, 2015 about him, though I quickly did some research.
Of course I heard of him, but I had never read his book(s) or watched him on the TV other than a few I dunno news items.
His announcement speech of his candidacy was unlike any other of my familiarity. I knew that I was voting for him at once.

I agree but this has a more organic feel to it and the fact that it was started by a gay man... I dont know.... kinda gives it a different feel. More like him on the fence when they get wind of this will feel that it is ok to WalkAway.
My gut tells me that it will be big and shift enough over to take more seats instead of losing any.
It doesn’t appear that President Trump was ever a Democrat st heart. And another thing for sure, he’ll never be a Democrat again!
