FULL TITLE: Jahi McMath, the teen declared brain dead by doctors in 2013, has died undergoing surgery in New Jersey after a five-year bitter legal fight by her mother who insisted medics were wrong and she was still alive

A girl at the center of the medical and religious debate over brain death has died after surgery in New Jersey, her mother said Thursday.

Nailah Winkfield said doctors declared her daughter Jahi McMath dead on June 22 from excessive bleeding and liver failure after an operation to treat an intestinal issue.

McMath was declared dead in December 2013 when she was 13 after suffering irreversible brain damage during routine surgery in California to remove her tonsils and a coroner signed a death certificate. Several specialists concurred after neurological tests.

Winkfield refused to accept the conclusion. She said her Christian beliefs compelled her to fight for continued care for her daughter, who she said showed signs of life through toe wriggles and finger movements.

The heart does not need input from the brain in order to beat. As long as it receives nutrients and oxygen, it will continue to beat.

At my place of work, I oversee researchers who grow heart cells in petri dishes. Those heart cells not only beat, but when electrodes are attached, electrocardiograms can be recorded. Beating is a function of cardiac tissue, not of brain input.

Remind me again, please, how I do not know what I am talking about?

I cannot answer that. If I were an MD doctor rather than a PhD doctor, I would not do surgery on a corpse.

I’m making an educated guess that the intestinal problems were an inevitable consequence of the digestive system being non functional since Jahi died.

...

I’ve seen a comment saying it was more than a simple tonsil removal. I wonder if that’s true.

"Your tax dollars paid for the costs of keeping this child on machines.

You may be right about that, I don't know. I do know that in a just world, the malpractice suit for death by tonsilectomy should have given her ample money to cover the costs if not outright ownership of the hospital.

I can sympathize with parents in cases like this but it seems much crueler to keep someone in such a state for so long-there's cases where there's a modicum of actual hope and there's cases where there is zero hope. Stopping such situations is why many of us have living wills and trust a loved one to make the right decision.

Too many cases where "medical science" wants to terminate a life for convenience and cost but this seems to be a case of keeping the soul hostage for earthly concerns.

It was not from a tonsillectomy. It was much more complicated and actually, it appeasr to have been unnecessary surgery.

Though not infallible, go to wiki for the series of events.

Ironically, she died the second time from massive bleeding....the same thing she died of the first time.

One that case is ongoing. Two sometimes anesthesia causes people to die. It doesn’t mean anything was done wrong. It means that some people ,particular obese people, do not react well to extreme sedation

You don’t understand the risk that every surgery entails. There is no routine surgery. Extreme sedation is very risky even for a healthy person. Unfortunately this young woman was obese. That adds risk

Right. Because here family gave her a cheeseburger when she was only to have small amounts of liquids and she choked to death the doctors and hospitals should be liable?

Euthanasia is actively killing someone. Withdrawing life support is NOT euthanasia. There are many pro life and Christian individuals who are horrified at what was done to this child. Most of the people throwing stones would not want similar treatment for themselves in a similar situation. Most people’s greatest fear is not death but precisely what happened to this child for many years. I think it is also a poor Christian witness. As a child of Christ I would far desire to depart and be in glory with my Savior than literally lay rotting in a nursing home attached to machines. Now I will be flamed as well but it needs to be said

The real tragedy is that the hospitalists etc did not react to the bleeding once it was discovered. Both my granddaughters had tonsillectomies- one a few years back at age 3, the other last year at age 5, the first one had a knife blade surgery, lots of pain and discomfort, the second had coblation ( radio frequency)- not a drop of blood, two or three days of discomfort and no issues. Big difference in risk.

Thanks. From Wiki:

According to court documents,[15] McMath was admitted to Children’s Hospital Oakland on December 9, 2013, for an adenotonsillectomy, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and submucous resection of bilateral inferior turbinates. It was hoped these procedures would provide improved airflow during her sleep at night. The hospital described these procedures as complicated. The family described the surgery as a routine tonsillectomy in media reports.[16][17]

After the surgeries were performed, McMath was conscious and according to her mother, Latasha “Nailah” Winkfield,[17][18][19] asked for a Popsicle while in the recovery room.[20] The Family took the Christmas tree from the hall way and put it in jahi’s room. The hospital staff had warned the family several times to stop being loud and people were complaining and that the family was asked to leave. She was given McDonalds hamburger by her family because she was hungry after being warned by hospital staff , no solid food orders. After eating she started to cough up blood. Her grandma, started to suction out her mouth causing it to bleed. This caused the child to go into cardiac arrest. On December 9, 2013, McMath suffered massive blood loss and consequent cardiac arrest. According to McMath’s doctors at Children’s Hospital Oakland, the loss of blood circulation caused whole brain death. On December 12, 2013, her doctors declared her brain-dead.[3] Her family was informed that she was legally dead,[21] and that as a result, life support systems would be discontinued.[15] Her family refused to accept the medical declaration of death by neurological criteria, said that McMath was not dead, and initiated legal proceedings in an effort to require the hospital to continue treatment.[6][22][23][24][25][26]
