From FR homepage:
Over 400,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic since inception in 1996 and our forum is read daily by over one hundred thousand freedom loving citizens and patriots from all around the country, and all around the world. We're currently delivering over twenty million pageviews per month to over one million monthly visitors. Oh, we're big stuff all right:
We can't imply blame towards conservatives or conservative web sites for the numbers dropping. When Obermeister took over in 2008 and the NSA/Snowden revelations came out, my guess is that it depressed comment activity for all conservatives across the board. I recall that Obie had an application form for working in his administration that demanded to know all screen names ever used and the applicant's entire posting historyevery comment ever made online. Most of us on here regularly would need a Ryder truck if they were printed out. Then there was Janet Napolitano as head of Homeland Security, who put Christians, veterans and pro-lifers on terrorism watchlists.
Then there was news of keystrokes being remotely recorded, and conservative reporter Sheryl Atkisson's reports of her computers turning themselves on and off at night for some time before the government raided her and removed them. And the announcements by Verizon and other Big Data companies that every word we ever type would be housed on servers, even the words we typed and erased and never sent. It's been a creeping intrusion.
Oh! I just saw above that Mayflower Madam remembered the name of that incredible opus: Libbylu.
It wasn't so much that people supported Cruz, but that many of the Cruzbots couldn't follow posting rules and flamed others who supported Trump, wouldn't give up with it, called names, etc. That's what got them zotted, not being for Cruz per se.
Yes
That was the rationale for the thread. A FReeper was just banned - and I pondered that watching for a ‘newbie’ with similar characteristics (language etc.) would be interesting.
Inspector SP.
I once knew of a FReeper that transferred (sold) his FReep name to another individual.
Mods found out.
Zotted that name.
Oy. I remember her.
No.
The proper procedure is to crawl back to JimRob with hat in hand, apologize for your unacceptable actions, and ask o be reinstated.
I also know that some Freepers have successfully asked JimRob to change their screen name, which is apparently technically feasible.
My understanding is that it is considered patently underhanded—without explicit permission for JimRob—to even attempt to register under a difference screen name once you have been zotted.
If I'm wrong about any of the above, somebody please correct me...
That is strange. ?? ‘selling’ a FReep name! It is so easy to register. The only concern is when sending a donation check personal data and banking information is ‘out there’. But I have confidence that Jim and John run a ‘tight ship’. No interference by sponsors etc.,
I first joined in March of 1998.
I went to protests (in 2000) in my area and met other FReepers, in a very liberal area (San Francisco).
Leftists found Freerepublic, and attempted to glean info from our home pages here. They even printed out photos of us and our families so they could identify us at the protests and harm us. I read about their plans. It was scary. Now I know they were Antifa types.
I googled my FReeper name and found them on a site called Indymedia discussing how they’d attack us at the next protest.
And so began The Great Scrubbing of our home pages.
Wasn’t there also some doofus called green eyed blond or some-such who turned out to be a fat old guy in a Lazy Boy recliner...lol
My regret is I failed to sign up in 97 when I was just lurking..a 98 sign up is pretty good but a 97 is the gold standard :-)
Hard to believe I have been around here for 20 years...whew.
Came close to getting banned once but they went easy on me because I notified the moderator and begged him to remove my ridiculous post!
Hint, don’t take Ambien and a couple hours later jump out of bed because you thought of something spectacularly brilliant to post! :-)
It was NOT brilliant, it was spectacularly stupid.
Most people have their ban lifted.
“IIRC, thats how they finally nailed Unabomber.”
Newspapers published his “manifesto”. His brother spotted the similarity and tipped off the FBI.
You prolly should explain that your handle refers to bullet groupings...
“Mine does, too. If I used an alias Id forget it and never be able to post here at all!”
Know someone who was totally stressed out at finals time... cracks open one of the test packets and wails “I’ve forgotten my name!!”
Right. His brother and brother’s wife. Once they went to the FBI, even though it sounded like Ted, they still had to prove it. I think that the FBI Agent In Charge, Fitzgerald, was the first to use the “science” of Forensic Linguistics to make the case. It was a hard sell to his superiors.
It was the phrase, “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too” that did the trick. The manifesto wrote the saying the correct way (which actually makes more sense), “You can’t eat your cake and have it, too”, and Kaczynski was known for saying it that uncommon way.
Wasn’t ferret banned, and reborn as hobb or hobbb? Didn’t make a secret of it.
Like you, I lurked for 15 months before registering. I was even on MS Chat with Yellow Rose of Texas, amom, Two Thirds Vote Aye, Towanda and some others during a lot of the Don Morgan shake up etc but had not yet registered. Yellow Rose finally talked me into it, LOL.
Those were indeed some fine days to have been involved.
There are dozens of old timer stories I could tell but one that I recall that made Jim pull his hair out was we had a thread discussing what was going to come out of Drudge about the Jesse Jackson love child. One of the posters guessed, and I mean plain guessed, what Matt Drudge would use for the url to post a story he had promised to hold until the next morning. We could therefore call it up and quote it from his page that was not yet linked.
Matt e-mailed Jim hotter than hell thinking his site was Hacked by FR posters. It was really his own fault as he had put the story he had promised to hold till the next morning on his server, unlinked. Jim was mortified that it looked like his posters were hacking Matt and the truth of the matter was really benign.
He took down the thread and gave time-outs and bans and really expressed hurt and disgust that we would misuse his site to cut into Matt’s trust with other news sources.
But, we had Jesse Jackson’s love child before anyone else in the nation had it, LOL.
You are right about Classy-Green-Eyed-Blond and she/he was only one of many pretend posers. Deep-in the Hurtgen-Forest was perhaps the saddest. The poser got in too deep and probably became ashamed or what he/they did by the time Sneaky Pete outed him.
