‘B’ Is for Burger: IHOP Officially Flips Name to IHOb—at Least for Now
Ad Week ^ | June 11, 2018 | Doug Zanger

As brand stunts go, IHOP has squeezed a decent amount of juice out of a teaser early last week indicating that the restaurant would change its name to IHOb.

IHOb ✔ @IHOb For 60 pancakin’ years, we’ve been IHOP. Now, we’re flippin’ our name to IHOb. Find out what it could b on 6.11.18. #IHOb

Social media was aflutter with speculation, especially with the brand’s attempt to throw people off the scent with a poll on June 5 that stretched the limits of plausibility (butternut squash?).

IHOb ✔ @IHOb IHOb? What could it b? #IHOb 4:10 PM - Jun 5, 2018 26%Biscuits 41%Bacon 6%Butternut Squash 27%Barnacles 38,805 votes • Final results

There appeared to be a decent amount of stickiness and good-natured hijinx as Stephen Colbert picked up on the switch and, in what has become de rigeur, other brands decided to swoop in on the fun. There was even one possible intergenerational flap and several other chuckle-inducing moments (see, Twitter isn’t that angry!).

Just what is this magical “b” you speak of, IHOP—excuse me—IHOb? The smart social media money was on “breakfast” or “brunch.” After much ado about apparently something, today, the brand revealed that the name change—and the “b”—stands for burgers.

The brand stunt includes changing store signage and the Twitter handle to IHOb, plus promoting the 60-year old breakfast chain’s new “Ultimate Steakburgers” offering, complete with seven varieties. Additionally, a Hollywood flagship IHOb restaurant will host a “VIB” launch party today.

New Coke Redux

Which, let's face it, worked well for Pepsi and Coke, and not very well for the other cola companies.

Everyone chill. The company has rebranded itself “IHOb” to promote this line of burgers, however the name is not a permanent change.

“I was hoping it was ‘breakfast’. There aren’t many places left where you can get a good breakfast all day.”

I used to love pancakes in their iconic buildings as a child and young adult.

Tried their “breakfast” a couple years ago and discovered that they fry their “toast”, and the salt in their shakers had solidified. The server shrugged and said they weren’t allowed to put rice in the shakers, and after I asked, brought me some to-go salt packets. Left him a good tip anyway.

Haven’t been back. RIP and good riddance.

I haven’t eaten there in a long while. In our area, ‘Silver Diner’ has become very popular and has very good food. Sometimes very slow service, though - because they’re always so crowded.

Years ago, “Friendly’s Ice Cream” shortened their name to “Friendly’s” in order to convey the fact that you can get a lot more than ice cream at their restaurants. That being the case, I can see IHOP changing their name as well, but I’m not sure “IHOB” is the best choice.

Nothing more than an advertising trick to get people talking about them.

To make it interesting IHOb should add a few ‘international’ takes on building a great burger...

I had a Canadian burger years ago that was exactly like eating a patty of meatloaf on a toasted bun... And a Chinese ‘burger’ that was one squished patty on two slices of white bread... (they can skip that one)..

"I was a bit disappointed by that announcement..."

Me too. I was hoping for Babes. You know, like topless waitresses bringing me pancakes dripping with syrup...

Or, was it topless waitresses dripping with syrup bringing me pancakes?...

I remember it well. Whenever my parents took us for a weekend in the cities we’d go to Pannekoeken for breakfast. I absolutely loved it.
