Microsoft eliminated its networking protocols. Any ideas
Self | 06/01/2018 | Self

Got the latest update on Windows 10, eliminated the Home Group and ALL networking capability. Trying to force me to use the Cloud. Uh, NO. My stuff is NOT going to be on the cloud. Use Sneakernet first.

Any 3rd party inexpensive networking software or work-arounds that can solve a small office computing networking issue?

There is no cloud. You're just using someone else's server.

Out of the goodness of their hearts.

I know. The “Cloud” as an example of marketing would do the Marketing Division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation proud.

And increasingly that server will will have security if not storage run from Communist China.

Not if you use their current data slurping software.

But you don’t have to use their software.

As I’ve said for at least a couple decades, the bandwidth of a box of tapes/drives driven across town is pretty awesome.

Never used nor liked the Homegroup function. According to MS website, they’re going to a Shared folder concept where you can access folders on other computers or devices. I’ve been doing this for years. I have a hard drive plugged into my secure router for which we download and access all of our files. It’s my own personal cloud. I backup the hard drive nightly.

It sounds to me like a step in the right direction.

Switch to Windows 10 Pro

You can get a Win 10 Pro key on eBay for under $5. They email it to you minutes after you place the order.

I've used them and they work.

Windows 10 Update removes Home Group, Networking features... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to Army Air Corps for the ping!

My small office must deal with other companies.

I have come to love the cloud.

Umm, no, they didn't remove "all networking capability". There are still ways to share files and so forth over your local network, and of course you still have internet network access.

Precisely! "The Cloud" is just a large number of on-the-ground physical datacenters somewhere, run by a bunch of IT geeks (I get to say that, I am one).

Nothing about those datacenters is floating in mid-air.

Some of it is buried pretty deep, however. "Anti-cloud"...

Totally stripped out the networking protocol.

UNC and SMB and network file sharing are still inside Win 10 home, they are just turned off now by default. The only thing Microsoft actially removed was Homegroups, which was an awful kludge and never should have added in the first place.

To re-enable File Sharing and turn on Network Discovery (Private Network) go to the Network Control and Sharing panel and enable for Private Network. Ditto Shared Printers if you want that.

It’s not hard.

Huh? I guarantee you that's incorrect, or else you're misapplying the terms "networking" and "protocol".

MS just removed the lame "HomeGroup" mechanism. That's not even up to the level of a "protocol" except in the most generic of senses.

All other protocols remain.

All networking remains.

What do you actually mean?

One way my old company attempted to minimize spam and DDOS attacks was to use devices that would filter IP addresses based on their geographical registration. We blocked anything from Eastern Europe, Asia, and Central/South America.

Once our developers began using Microsoft's "Cloud" and Azure, we had constant failures, because there was no way to know which MS data centers were being used, including those in South America and Asia. We wound up removing most of the blocking, and immediately had an uptick in SPAM.
