David Goodall listened quietly as his loved ones started to sing.
Then he took a breath, made a wish and blew out the flames.
But Goodall was not wholeheartedly celebrating the milestone this month in Perth, Australia. The botanist and ecologist, who is thought to be the countrys oldest scientist, said that he has lived too long. And now, he said, he is ready to die.
I greatly regret having reached that age. I would much prefer to be 20 or 30 years younger, he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
When asked whether he had a nice birthday, he said: No, Im not happy. I want to die.
Its not sad, particularly. What is sad is if one is prevented.

He regrets living to that age and then says he’d rather be 30 years younger?
Or should he have just killed himself 30 years earlier?
>>Once one is past the stage of middle life, one has paid back to society the debts that have been paid out, Goodall said.
Once you’ve funded the Welfare State as a wage slave for 40 years, you should shuffle off this mortal coil and give your wealth to the State to do as it pleases.
Well, I can’t judge to be sure, but I can’t understand, either. At age 69, I’m going through changes, and I guess at 100+ it’s a whole new ball game. But if you’re still mentally competent and physically comfortable, I can’t see what’s the rush.
He got his wish, and left this level of reality.
His adult grandchildren surrounded him during the last few hours, chatting and playing JS Bach music. It was almost like a family patiently waiting at the airport for someone to catch a scheduled flight. Back when non-ticket holders could walk up to the boarding gate, sit by the window and watch as relatives flew off on their flights.
Strange and sad. I have a feeling this made up ritual will become more common as people live well past 100, but exist in poor health.
This option will be considered by those not tied to teachings of most Christian Churches.
Done. He is dead. RIP.
David Goodall, 104, Scientist Who Fought to Die on His Terms, Ends His Life

but old man, make a spectacle of yourself...
Reminds me of Charlie West, a devout Baptist who lived until his late 80s. His wife had died previously from cancer and his doctors had decided his body was shutting down and nothing could be done for him so they took him off all his meds except for the pain meds, sent him home and let him prepare to die.
His friends all came by to say their farewells, his Bill Gaither tapes hummed in the background. You had never met a man more ready to die than Charlie West. He was fond of saying “I know more people in Heaven than I do on Earth and I’m tired of looking at the ones here.” He wanted so badly to be reunited with his wife.
There was just one thing wrong. Charlie West got better. He was so much better he dressed and walked into church one Sunday where his friends jokingly dubbed him Lazarus. Charlie was not amused. He was downright perplexed and angry that God hadn’t taken him yet.
This went on for six months until God mercifully took him home one morning. Charlie West was 89.
Contrast this with his son Dan West who died this February at age 78. West had been a Vice President with Monsanto, invested well and was able to travel the world on various tours and cruises. His wife had also passed away from cancer five years earlier but, after some mourning, Dan West returned to globehopping and seemingly scratching off everything one could possibly have on a bucket list.
Dan West passed away while swimming with humpback whales off the coast of the Dominican Republic of a massive heart attack. It was a very Dan way to die. Almost everyone admires what a “cool” way it was to check out from this life.
The point is that God alone knows the time we are born and the time we die. Perhaps with suicides, assisted or not, God allows a life to end. But God is sovereign as He demonstrated to Charlie West. And God does not wait for us, as was true with Dan West.
But you can always choose what your attitude about living is like and whether to approach the day with gladness or dread, with thankfulness or gloom. Dan wanted to get everything he could out of this life before moving on to the next one.

"Suicide is for people who can't wait to find out where the hell it is they're going to go. Holy s**t! I've been waiting a long time. I don't have many nights like that, but when you think about it, you know, kind of it'd be a goof, man, yeah. Suicide. I've always pictured myself on the ledge. There's got to be a little show business involved. You know, you don't want to slump over a porcelain fixture. Let me get up here. Set the record; be the first guy to reach the double yellow line. Have your picture in the centerfold of the newspaper. Actually, a picture of the building with a dotted line showing "leaper's path".
Suicide. Suppose you worked on the suicide hot line. Helping people; talking them out of it. That's your job. "Hello, Suicide Hot Line?" Then one morning, you wake up...a little depressed. Should you call in sick? I'd like to see a top salesman commit suicide, a real persuasive guy up on the ledge...and the priest talks him out of it...and he talks the priest into it!"
He ended his life? He was a demented sicko with no respect for human life.
“He wanted so badly to be reunited with his wife.”
Yeah, but it doesn’t really work that way.
Matt 22:30
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
Then somebody has to discover and clean up after your stinky corpse.
Although less messy than a gun.
What an idiot.....the guy still had his mind well in tact and no serious discomfort....he just decided he no longer wanted to live. So it was a suicide.
I found it odd that he was out with his family going through some garden. The way he talked, everything was pointless. So why go on a last jaunt in the garden?
You can learn a lot by watching how a person lives. Perhaps even more in watching how they die.
if one has a bad disease and they want to kill themselves, I guess no one can stop them but as a taxpayer I DO NOT WANT TO PAY FOR IT nor do I want to read about it glorified in the newspaper....
God IS sovereign. But I don’t believe He is the force behind assisted suicide. That act is taking the decision out of God’s hands.
Suicide is very risky for your eternal soul - the only sin you cant ever ask God forgiveness for.
Ask, and you shall receive.
