Apple scraps $1 billion Irish data center over planning delays

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Apple ditched plans to build an 850 million euro ($1 billion) data center in Ireland because of delays in the approval process that have stalled the project for more than three years, the iPhone maker said on Thursday.

Apple announced plans in February 2015 to build the facility in the rural western town of Athenry to take advantage of green energy sources nearby, but a series of planning appeals, chiefly from two individuals, delayed its approval.

Ireland’s High Court ruled in October that the data center could proceed, dismissing the appellants who then took their case to the country’s Supreme Court.

I doubt this. Green energy is a scam.

I have no doubt that Apple was using a green energy scheme in Ireland much the same way many companies were using it here in the US when Obastard was president.

How many billions of dollars were wasted on green energy boondoggles by start-up and well established corporations alike who lined up to get that free tax payer money to “go green” and save the earth and crap like that.

I suspect Apple was looking for a green energy handout. And it never came.

And - surprise, surprise - the American "Environmental Engineer" plays the Victim Card, complaining he's had to endure "xenophobic" comments from the other local residents, who are actually area natives, and who for some inexplicable reason, have crassly mentioned in angry online posts the national origin of the one sole resident who has now single-handedly denied economic prosperity to the entire rest of the community.

Yes people, there truly ARE "Ugly Americans" overseas, and not surprisingly, they are from the Left side of our political spectrum.

Apparently Ireland did not want the center.

Ireland wanted it. The County wanted it. There were just two individuals who kept appealing and losing. It's a form of barratry. They kept appealing their losses. . . Apple just had enough and decided to take the project elsewhere in Ireland.

It is not even necessary for Apple to be close to a "green energy" generation plant. It's just more convenient. Apple usually builds its own green energy generation. However, until they get their own green energy on line, they can merely buy enough energy from the green generation plant which is then put into the grid to compensate for what they use from the grid where ever they locate.

Apple's owned plants have been 100% energy self-sustaining since 2013. All of Apple's owned and RENTED locations became energy self-sustaining as of 2017.

Well now, this makes things a bit clearer, eh?

Oh, yes, it does. It also tells me why Apple is going elsewhere in Ireland. They know these bozos would just find another reason to start the process all over again.

It doesn’t seem to matter that socialist, tyrannical, bloated government is an historical and current study in abject failure - the world keeps going with it instead of freedom and limited government.

STUPID!

It doesn't even take that. . . you can see it in an HOA or Condo Association. It starts with the innate desire to stop your neighbor from doing something you don't like.

“...who currently lives in Ireland...”

That might change. Either the living-in-Ireland part, or just the “living” bit.

Oh well. They still grow great potatoes.

Maybe if Apple created a subsidiary named Potato Inc. then the data center would have gotten the go-ahead. Or maybe Raspberries Inc.

Anyway, only two malcontents blocked it. Another case of the minority screwing the majority.

This data center was to serve the European market. Internet latency (aka ‘lag’) means that it makes more sense to build a data center for Europe in Europe. Apple is building and has built many data centers in the US to serve North America.

You can doubt it all you want.

Ireland offers minimal tax credits for green energy. . . so why bother.

But, I refer you to the severe penalties of Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 which apply to any officer of a publicly traded company who lies in a statement about that company's operations that materially can impact the value of that company. This would be such a lie. Those penalties are a personal $10 to $20 million fine and 10 to 20 years in prison.

Green energy can be a scam. . . or it can work. It depends on what's being done with it. Apple IS running its plants with it. Their new headquarters roof is entirely covered with solar panels, more than sufficient to run the entire building for more than 24 hours, even on cloudy days, and then some. That "and then some" is sold back onto the grid.

Apple is partners in a solar power generation plant outside of Reno Nevada that is much more than sufficient to power its Reno Datacenter. The balance of its power is sold onto the grid.

Apple quickly ran into legal trouble, thanks to two individuals who objected to the development on environmental grounds: lawyer Sinead Fitzpatrick and engineer Allan Daly.

It's a form of barratry.

I was unfamiliar with the term "Barratry", so I looked it up"

"Barratry - vexatious litigation or incitement to it."

Now I see! It is simply an alternative spelling of "American Bar Association".

Apple wants to save a dime by going with green energy.

I've heard that Ireland is beautify green in the spring, but the electric from the socket comes out green?

Sounds kind of AC/DC?

BS.

They sited in Ireland due to the tax advantage, not green energy.

But they don’t want to make it look like they’re cancelling the project because it’s no longer tenable under the Trump tax plan, so they made up “planning delays.”

Betcha.

Absolutely true about the tax reasons for choosing Ireland, but you lose your bet on the Trump tax cuts since they still have to have a European iCloud server farm location to serve all the European Apple customers without lag. . . and Apple has announced they are moving their development plans to another county in Ireland. The "planning delays" started long before Trump even announced his candidacy.
