WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD APRIL 27, 2018
freerepublic | APRIL 27, 2018 | greeenyes

Posted on 04/27/2018 8:07:01 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be gardening.

We had 1 1/2 inches of rain Friday night and Saturday. I was starting to worry about a long dry spell...

Greeting from west Michigan. Garden tilled once last week, should be doing it again this week. Cleaned out the asparagus bed really well. Daffodils in full bloom. Cut down 2 saplings that shaded my paw paw trees too much. Put in fruit tree food spikes - 8 of them for the 4 trees. Fingers crossed for some first time fruit this year. Way earlier this spring I did a pruning on some lower branches and sealed them off with tree sealer. Looking ahead on the temps, next week the lows overnight will be in the low 40’s. Making me think we will not have a frost. So I’ll be planting my pea pod seeds after the second tilling this week and maybe putting in some broccoli seedlings, they would be easy to cover up. Also might start some radishes early. Also looking forward to the irises, cleaned about 300 pounds of cr@p last year that were choking them out. And they have been fertilized already. So off to a good start. Also started indoors san marzanos, bush cukes, costa rican red peppers and a few other special ones. Seems every year I look more forward to the garden and manage to do a better job. This year I am feeling really good physically. Best wishes to all for great gardens this year. Remembering someone’s post about either a Japanese or Chinese proverb that said the best thing to put in your garden is your shadow.

Here's your Weekly Ithaca Fix!

I found a House Finch nest on the ground; it's made almost completely of his shed mane and tail hair!

He's beautiful! thanks....(a tear in each eye)
Love the nest. What you don't know is when we had our Saanen dairy goats - all white hair - we used to find their hair in nests too, It was so sweet. One bird box in particular has a nest chickadees built from their white hair and green moss. It was beautiful. The goats used to rub against the fence in the spring, leaving their shedding hair and we could watch the birds taking it away. It was a real blessing you shared those - thanks friend!

For some reason, maples don’t do well here; and we’re only 4200’, so birch don’t care for it, either, so no syrup tapping for us.

Our bees should be getting used to the place when the trees blossom: apricot, peach, cherry, apple, feral pears, wild plums, and uncountable chokecherries. Next up are the berries, wild flowers & weeds; then tons of yellow clover, bergamot mint, and golden rod. They should do well, if they don’t freeze to death over the winter. Hopefully, they’ll help with the garden, too.

I’ll try to get pics this summer, if my handiwork isn’t too embarassing to share. LOL

Do those paw paw trees stink like old socks? That’s what someone told me.

Not at all. I don’t detect any bad smell. They are beautiful trees with beautiful dark green large leaves.

My three hydrangea “sticks” arrived this week. They’re in the refrigerator for now.

Not yet but they are old enough now 6-7 feet tall last year expect another foot of growth this year. I have had the fruit, though, the most delicious thing I have ever tasted (in nature). Crème brulee for manufactured. :)

I have a paw paw patch of perhaps 10 or 12 that spread underground. They will not grow over about 4 feet high

I planted a seed

I have tried seeds before they are very difficult to start from seed, so several years ago I got some seedlings shipped. They root very deep and fast. If they are not getting tall maybe there is an obstruction down under or maybe not enough sun. I did go to a nursery once in southern Michigan and saw 3-4 foot trees with a few fruit.
