The U.S. electric grid has become increasingly vulnerable to what the federal government is describing as an unprecedented wave of attacks that threatens to cripple the nation, according to a new investigative report that warns the energy industry is lagging in efforts to boost physical security of these critical sites.
Amid a wave of increasing attacks across the country on key power stations, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, or NERC, has been struggling to force the power industry to enact a series of security improvements meant to stop would-be attackers and terrorists from crippling the nation's infrastructure.
Since 2014, "security risks to the power grid have become an even greater concern in the electric utility industry," according to a new Congressional Research Service report that warns the power industry "has not necessarily reached the level of physical security needed based on the sector's own assessments of risk."

I understand that the Texas grid is independent, but is it protected from such attacks on it? Also stand alone is a double edge if the Texas grid suffers a successful attack its on is own no one can help them by supplement their losses.
If it's a security issue, then it IS the responsibility of the government to take care of it.
But we all know how responsible the government is. Think Pontius Pilate.
It'll wash its hands of any responsibility so fast your head will spin when TSHTF.
And take care of themselves first.
Just like the One Second After Series.
And nothing about off-grid PV solar power in the whole thread, which is the only kind of power I used for Internet access and posting here for 6 years (along with lights, etc.). Astounding.
The most likely kind of attack to turn out the lights across this country will be a series of large nuclear weapons attacks by foreign nations.
I thought they were closed circuit to the plant itself. What’s sad is that a stupid action movie portrayed power plants as closed circuit anyways.
Please take a look at post 19 - what do you think?
It’s late, but maybe - MAYBE - not too late. The money’s been appropriated already. If what I’m being told is true than President Trump can redirect that money from being used to murder to very probably saving lives.
The money is now there and available. All we need is the will to do the right thing.
Thanks for the Popcorn reminder! We could pretty much live on that alone, LOL! ;)
Everything is "vulnerable" to unprecedented waves of attack.
Giving credit where due; I was quoting Lurker and expanding upon his point. ;)
As [Lurker] says: When it happens, and its going to happen, the new currency will be the Calorie.
Due in no small part to Smart Meters, which provide miscreants literally millions of access points to the grid.
All clearly visible from any roadway in Anytown, USA. Replacing them all would take years.
No need for cyber attacks.
A .308 rifle with a scope, teams of 3 coordinated by cell phone...all firing simultaneously at transformers at any number of electrical substations across the country.
G. Gordon Liddy wrote an article for Omni Magazine over 20 years with almost that exact scenario. It was coupled with attacks on other critical infrastructure like natural gas lines, rail choke points, etc.
Strangely enough Ive never been able to find it on the web. That is probably a good thing.
Best,
L
“Due in no small part to Smart Meters...”
I’m thinking that any of those ‘smart’ tv’s, cars, iphones,...smart anything, is not such a smart thing to depend on after all.
Not for those who yearn for liberty anyway.
Long shelf stable. Popcorn for breakfast was pioneer cold cereal. Can also grind it for corn meal. Win Win Win.
Win Win Win! :)
