A one-of-a-kind coffee shop opened in Austin this week. RunLab on Pressler Street off Cesar Chavez downtown has a new addition to their workout facility and store -- Empowered Coffee. Behind the counter youll find friendly faces like 21-year-old William Mullican. I love making coffee, he said... The new coffee shop is unlike any other in town because its operated four days a week by seven young adult employees who all have Down syndrome or Cerebral Palsy.

It’s nice to have some uplifting news for a change.
My youngest sister had Down’s syndrome, and she lived for working at McD’s (who did this sort of thing for years). She loved people, and really was upset on days when she couldn’t go to work.
A lot of folks who are “normal” could have learned much from her.
And, she actually had a real job. Something Bernie the mooch has never had.
Hiring disabled people who, despite their disabilities, can do the job properly? No problem at all.
Just my 2 cents' worth...
Pretty much ANY organisation to “help” the disadvantaged (at least outside of churches), tends to be run by marxists. It’s been that way for a LOOOOOONG time. The only disabled people that aren’t forced into being marxist poster children are military veterans, or old people that they don’t give a crap about anyway.
I take offense to that. My daughter has a severe brain injury.
She’s conservative.
She also is a statistics major with a 3.8 GPA.
She’s worked very hard to overcome severe speech problems and seizures and other issues.
She doesn’t want help from anyone and is determined to make it on her own without the help of anyone.
Why would you take offense to that? I said NOTHING about your daughter, or indeed, any OTHER disabled person. I was talking strictly about organisations.
To further clarify:
The disabled people who accept help from such organisations (and obviously, your daughter is not one of them), are indeed often made into poster children.
I still stand by the point I was making, even if I was perhaps not as clear about it as I should have been.
You said “The only disabled people that arent forced into being marxist poster children are military veterans, or old people that they dont give a crap about anyway.”
I think I addressed that in my most recent reply. I’m not going to clutter up this thread any further. Again, your daughter obviously doesn’t fall under the argument I was making.
They should open one in Iceland.
I think the left has both done harm and good for the disabled,ie, helped enforce their rights, and in the meantime coddled and negatively enforced the lazy suckers of society.
It’s nice to hear some good news. Many people say, well, parents of Down’s syndrome children, say they bring much joy to their lives.

HEB Grocery Stores in Texas employee people with mild mental problems associated with Down’s Syndrome, not a lot but a few. I see them mostly as baggers at checkout. They are a bit slower than most baggers but that is okay. I have always been impressed with the courtesy and humbleness of those employees.
HEB “are good people” and their stores are very superior in product and price.
Good for her!
No, also churches. Church charities are generally full-blown communist redistributive schemes. They want illegal aliens.
Grocery stores where I am. Usually autistic. Courteous, dedicated, reliable. Some I have seen there for years.
Next time I am in Austin...
