Trump Returns to His Democratic Roots
National Review ^ | March 7, 2018 | Michael Tanner

Posted on 03/09/2018 12:55:44 PM PST by TBP

It has largely slipped under the radar screens of partisan hatred in Washington, but has anyone noticed that in the last couple of months Donald Trump has become . . . a Democrat? Of course, for most of his life, Trump was a Democrat, a faithful fundraiser for Chuck Schumer and Hilary Clinton, and comfortably liberal in most of his positions. But once he decided to run for president as a Republican, he underwent a total transformation, becoming an arch-conservative. And during his first year in office, he governed like a conservative Republican, slashing taxes and regulations, appointing conservative judges, and throwing money at the military.

Since January, though, President Trump has been returning to his Democratic roots. In the past two months, he has embraced a big-spending budget deal that funds nearly all the Democrats’ top priorities and pushes deficits over $1 trillion for as far as the eye can see. He also proposed a massive new infrastructure program. And now, he has embraced a trade policy right out of the Bernie Sanders playbook.

In fact, during the 2016 campaign, Bernie had explicitly called for tariffs on steel. Hillary Clinton had also adopted a remarkably anti-trade posture. Many people are rightly pointing out that Trump’s rejection of the Trans-Pacific Partnership has left the United States dangerously isolated and economically disadvantaged in Asia, but they forget that Hillary too had campaigned on pulling out of the trade pact.

Has President Trump found his inner Democrat? If he has, how will the two parties adjust?

I’m old enough to remember when the National Review was run by Bill Buckley and was actually a good mag.

They sure are desperate to smear President Trump.

If President Trump has found his inner Democrat, it’s the old school late 1950s-1960s style Democrat. The kind that would be seen as a radical right winger to today’s Democrat party.

President Trump is better than any alternative we were presented. I can live with his moderation.

Nothing new here. I’m a free trader but I knew when I voted for Trump he was on the other side of the issue.

The Republican party is, or was, the party of the middle class, which has for too long been forgotten. The National Review since Wm F Buckley’s passing has become a rag sheet for Republican-flavored globalist elites, who favor boiling the frog slowly, as opposed to the Democrat-flavored globalist elites who favor boiling frogs quickly.

Has anyone noticed how the National Review has yet to apolgize for their extraordinary hatred of candidate Trump? The Weekly Standard remains out in the weeds also.

Come in the house, chilluns. You’ll catch your death of cold out there.

Hey! How dare you use your brain! As U.S. Americans, we aren’t supposed to do that! We should just praise everything The Won tells us!

I’m old enough to remember when conservatives were conservatives, and were against Clintonism.

If they are calling him a Democrat, they sure are stooping pretty low!

In the book “Let Trump Be Trump”, they had to talk to him during the campaign about his donations to Schumer, Clinton, et al.

He was baffled and said “I’m a businessman. I give to everyone. What’s the deal?”

They told him he had to start donating to Republicans.

I found that passage kind of funny. He looked at the whole thing as a business decision, political grease, no more, no less.

I am not worried.

Trump knows what he is doing.

So he gives a few crumbs to the opposition, but he is and will do the right thing about important issues.

Well, if you haven’t noticed the Democrats and the Republicans, including Trump, have spent the last decade or more trying to nuke the middle class. More taxes aren’t going to help.

The entire Republican party has been more or less closet dems since GHWB anyway.

That’s why they’re referred to as the ‘uniparty’.

They talk a good game when it doesn’t matter, but when the rubber meets the road, they don’t deliver.

This President is dealing with opposition like no one’s ever seen before. The onslaught, from his own party no less, is in high gear and relentless.
