"Why Are People Still Obsessed?"
Because it's about bowling, man. I mean like, who doesn't enjoy a movie about bowling?

Like many Coen Brothers movies,
The Big Lebowski doesn't seem to have a strong central story or plot, but manages to capture the quirkiness of everyday life with their characters.
The way The Dude and Walter play off each other is at the heart of the charm of this movie. They are quite different personalities, and fight through most of the film, but they seem to reflect many real life friendships that are complicated.
A lot of the movie is silly, or downright weird. And Jeff Bridges and John Goodman are always fun to watch.

It was Southern California neurotic apathy to a “T.”

One of the greatest movies ever. It should be absolutely terrible, but you can’t stop watching it.

One of my favorite movies of all time. One I seek to own. Absolutely hilarious.
A satire of the slacker doofus lifestyle.

See references to it constantly, but just another movie I have never seen.

In this scene, in which Labowski dreamed he was a rolling bowling ball, Jeff Bridges' wife, who was on the set that day, had the extras stuff their garments with abundant extruding fake hair as a practical joke.

I always think of this movie in the same vein as "Napoleon Dynamite." Not really much of a plot, just a lot of bizarre slice-of-life interactions.
But I love "Napoleon Dynamite." I hated "Lebowski" and still do. I don't know why. But hey, that's just ... like ... my opinion.
