All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

Posted on 02/26/2018 12:12:20 PM PST by CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

Erwin is real close to where I am. It’s pretty down there. I drive through there going to Asheville to the eye doctor.

If anybody has advice about the surgery, lens choices, etc , I’d appreciate it.

It was easy-peasy. Only had local anesthesia for each eye. Waved off the Valium, as I am hypersensitive.

I had both eyes done for distance correction. Same reasoning as you, readers are cheap and ubiquitous, but I think if I had it to do over again I'd go for mono-vision, one eye distant and one near.

For both eyes I needed to go back to have the back of the lens capsule lasered off the lens. It's a 5 min procedure.

I rejected multifocal lenses as I thought clear edges on a blur wouldn't work well for me (I'm a micromachinist), OTOH Mom has multifocal and is happy with them. When the light hits them just right it's a bit odd seeing bright and dark hexagons in her pupils...

•Now just add foodstuff and place in the sun.

Eh?

Why not just put it on a stove to speed evaporation?

Stoves won’t work if you don’t have electricity or gas during SHTF times.

That was the instruction for the "Make your own Fridge (Zeer)" at post #822.

Not for an oven.

Cotton, I am very interested in this thread since I’m saving money for more acreage to buy so I can build a cabin with a solar array for power, a greenhouse and large garden and keep chickens and goats for food and sale/barter-my goal is to be able to live totally off grid if necessary-I’ve done it before when I was in my late teens and my 1st hubby and I did it when we were in our early to mid 20’s but that was a long time ago...

Being a naturalist all my life, I don’t have/never had real “medical issues”, other than the occasional injury needing medical attention-including a near fatal accident early in 2003-but like you, I’ve had poor distance vision for a long time-glasses from the time I was 11-12-I started wearing contacts in my early 20’s, and have worn progressive lens contacts since they were available. I also longed for vision correction surgery for years, but I could not justify the price...

In my family, those of us with lighter colored eyes-blue-or gray/green ones like mine-will have cataracts by our early 60’s-when It happened to me, I saw the chance to get rid of them and get my vision corrected, too with lens implants-so last August I did that-I’m now seeing 20/20 left eye and 20/25 right-no more putting on contacts every morning to drive, keeping a pair of back-up glasses etc-it has been a great help at work-I keep a pair readers in my shirt pocket for reading small print on plans, etc, a pair in my 4x4 and one by my computer. two of the guys I work with have had lens implants done and they are also very pleased-I think you will be as well-go for it-disfrute...

Thanks for sharing your story. I definitely think this will be a blessing in disguise. Eye problems have been my biggest concern when it comes to a prepping scenario so this could solve it with a couple simple surgeries :-)

That’s great that you are planning on living an off-the-grid lifestyle. Or at least to be able to. I guess it’s distinction. As long as we know we are able to, we can enjoy luxuries as long as they last. Luxuries like electricity and running water :-)

Are you planning on moving locations or just adding to existing acreage?

Escaped California 4 years ago, picked East Tennessee to relocate to. We thought being the middle of the country, it would have moderate Summers and Winters. Or it could go the other way and have bad ones of each, but luckily it didn’t! We moved here without jobs, no family, just showed up. So far I don’t regret it one bit.

Thanks for the information. I’ve read a bit about the monovision, but I’m not sure my brain would adapt. Having had bad vision my whole life I’m kind of worried if I were to have problems with one eye then I would need glasses again. I guess it would be a problem if the long-distance eye didn’t work.

After reading about the multifocals I think I’ll pass. I already have lots of night blindness, Halos, glare. Probably just from the myopia. the multifocal lenses are supposed to add to that since they have irregularities. I already have an irregular cornea, almost keratoconus, and multifocals are not recommended for people that already have light scattering all over the place!

But I’m excited to see well for the first time ever without glasses. Even if it’s not 20/20, it’s going to be better than what I currently have. And will be better for prepping for sure! It’s a blessing in disguise that I have it so early.

Still here, though not extremely active. In the middle of house remodeling and boxes :-). One day, soon, the project will be completed. The sooner the better.

Good to see that this thread continues on. x x (fingers of both hands crossed).

So sorry to hear about your eye condition. Last year you were having trouble with your hands being painful to use. As Bette Davis said: “Old age ain’t for sissies.”

I love these little canning jar salt and pepper shakers. The best thing is they are 97 cents at Walmart. Cheap AND adorable.

link to wee canning jar shakers

They say Golden Harvest, Wally's cheap canning jars, but if you want one that says ball or Kerr, they probably cost quite a bit more. There's nothing wrong with the quality of these little shakers.

We’ve been here for years and are still living with boxes and remodeling! The last bedroom is almost done though. And then we get to start on the basement! Right now it’s still full of boxes and 1970s paneling and carpet.

So I understand! Are you redoing the whole house?

You’re on!

Thanks for the well wishes. This is actually one surgery I’m really looking forward to. Or I guess I should say I’m looking forward to the after-effects once it is over.
